88 vert. Rebuild with install and removal 4500 + tax at mazdees ?
On rotary dynamics website they qouted me at around 2500 all in.
Am I missing something ? Is installation and removal that expensive.

These motors are some of the easiest motors ever made to be pulled out of a car. Back in 2000 we charged men 500 to do swaps out of first and second gens with the same motor. If i had more confidence id rebuild these too.
4500 is a bit pricy. make sure hes actually building yours and not giving you a reconfigured one he built and has lying around the shop. does 4500 include some type of porting? i hope so. too high IMO.

There are so many variables when quoting a rebuild.
Are you providing a re-buildable core?
Whats the condition of the irons? Do they need re-surfacing?
How are the rotor housings? Scored, scratched, flaking? New housings are roughly $700 each.
What exactly is being replaced? Are bearings being re-used? oil scrapers?
I've recently quoted an FD engine for a member, they are not providing any core. $4500 is my ported shortblock price. You install yourself.
I'm building a boosted Renesis engine from scratch for another member, including all the machining and sourcing new parts its going to cost $6000+ just for the shortblock.
I know Jim does great work and he wont steer you wrong, I just think $2500 is a base price if you bring him a MINT re-buildable core....which hardly any are mint.

Most places I know charge $900~ Removal and Re-installation (RnR). That includes new fluids, as well as any other bits that may have disappeared or failed during either process.
Your quote, like RPM says, entirely depends on what exactly is being done. A seal and rotor kit has to be the better part of $1200, and Rotor Housings are probably $600 each (Been a few years since I priced anything out). That's $2400 right there.

The price looks right especially provided that this is a reputable shop. I would definitely negotiate on the porting.
The price may drop if a lot of your stuff is great, good housings can save up to $1400 on the rebuild.
It's a lot easier to quote $4,500, then show what you can re-use and re-negotiate down and get you to spend a little on porting and exhaust.
On the other hand, imagine an optimistic $3,200 quote than add a $1,300 surprise after the engine is all apart.
I think the quote is solid.

Message JDK and see what he says. Rotary Dynamics isn't together anymore and the website is out of date, so see what he says about what you've been quoted when you give him all the details.
Also be prepared for that $4500 to jump up in size once Mazdee's has your engine apart and he can 'judge the internals.'

Good info here.
The site is likely out of date since they are not operational any more. Like RPM said there are many variables.
I have had my engine rebuilt twice, and the price has been very different each time based on what kind of work was being done.

1) The rotary dynamics quote is not all in. That quote is you drop of the core with everything off it and then they rebuild it and give it back to you. That does not include any labor of adding all the accessories, replacing gaskets that need to be replaced, and or just fixing **** along the way that break or are not in acceptable condition.
2) Rotary Dynamics is no longer in business AND those prices are from way back when. Mazda parts for our cars keep going up so even if they were I highly doubt those quoted prices would be what your paying even for the core.
3) Its being done at a reputable shop, unlike others with unhappy customers which I will not get into as its none of my business

Yes I called, I said on a good day with most if not all reusable what would a rebuild plus install cost.
I know, I am not complaining just getting input because for that price I can have another better taken care of vert with fewer kms or even a t2.
Edit: yes this is my first time but I believe I have spoken with him at some meets before (Scarborough Mazda)

With cars that don't have a high value, trying to find another running one might be a better option for you. That's why u find a bunch of parts cars and rollers. People just buy them for parts and drivetrains.

Rebuild kits are no longer available at mazda. You have to buy the gaskets coolant rings and everything individually. That increased the price alot. New housings are at least $1100 each or more list. New oil control rings are easy $300 or so (But they are reused about every time) Every year I look at the costs of these parts they have increased. There is still some reasonable places to buy kits but keep in mind you have to pull the engine out and reinstall. Also think of the overhead in renting the shop and paying employee's.

Agreeing with Ian 100% there. Everything for Rx-7's are sky rocketing in prices. I remember the time I decided to quote that convertible roof switch, $700 and I get it in 2-3 weeks? lmfao best I just re soldered it myself. I rebuilt my vert motor myself as it was a spare laying around I learned from my dad seeing that he races a lot down south and I normally watch Aaron's rebuild video just to remember the basics hehehe. That man does wonders...

That's what I paid for my rebuild, although I did the removal in reinstall myself. I needed new housings, and had some other things thrown in the mix. If price is that much of an issue, grab some tools and a rebuild DVD and do it yourself. Save some money AND learn something. If I had work space that's the route I would have gone. Sadly the driveway is no place for rebuilding an engine.

you ALWAYS get what you pay for.
caveat: you live in Hamilton, I have noticed a trend with people who live in places that aren't Toronto/GTA are USED to paying a lot less for everything.
Here's why: overhead in these places is LESS.
With the price of gas, I don't understand why anyone would want to drive an NA FC on the street....

When driving a sports car, the last thing you should be concerned with is gas prices. If it's that much of an issue it's time to put up a for sale sign and pick up one of the tons of stock used Honda's out there ripe for picking.

JDK rebuilt my engine last year with porting, flywheel machining and a oil pan brace for less than what mazdees quoted you, I went single turbo and beat the sh*t out if my car last year at SRTA with 0 issues and I plan on doing it again this year, I would PM Jim if I were you.
Came with all the gaskets too, my rotors and housings were in good shape so I didn't need to replace them.
I'm sure Mazdees does great work, but I only trust JDK with my engines now. Here's my engine when I picked it up from JDK, I think I bought a steel engine mount from him too.
