Just bought my first FD
Paid for as of today (and no, I didn't pay the asking price in the ad). She departs Calgary on November 10th, arriving in toronto 8-14 days later.

She's a long-term project for me, I'm told the engine is pretty much shot, she's blowing piles of white smoke.
She needs a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to getting started on it.

I also paid a mechanic in Calgary to go by and have a look at the car.
Edit: No, I've never owned an RX-7 before.
This car is just something I decided to pick up to work on very slowly. I'm not anticipating driving it for (optimistically) 1 year, but far more likely 2 years.

What I *do* know is that it blows a ton of white smoke. I'm buying it from a dealership that imported it, and to be honest they don't seem to know a ton about it.
I'm assuming that it's going to need extensive work.
My plan for the moment is to get it into my hands, jack it up and give it a solid once-over.
Short term plan will be to put a freshly rebuilt motor into it (mainly so that I can move it from point A to point B without needing a tow truck. (Point A being my garage, point B being potential locations where I'm going to need things like welding done)
Longer term will be to slowly replace just about everything on it that can be replaced.
In the end I'm planning on owning a weekend car that I'd like to take to lapping events or possibly some autocross.

I do plan on doing an extensive amount of the work myself, but after initially telling myself that I'd attempt it, I decided against doing the rebuild on the engine myself. I've done a large quantity of... more complex level work on piston engines, but I'll freely admit I have a lot to learn when it comes to a rotary engine. I decided that I didn't jump headfirst into rebuilding piston engines, so I won't jump headfirst into rebuilding rotary's either.
I'm sure I'll be all over the technical boards (and the search function) over the next year or so as I work on this.

goodluck on the new project. I looked at that before when I was looking for a shell. Its originally black and was repainted yellow, not sure if it was cym. I was just iffy on buying sight unseen.
Theres a black rhd fd in TO thats for 3k with a blown motor, of course it shows up 2 weeks after i buy a full car...goodluck with the project.

You know the tons of white smoke could just be your standard rotary condensation until fully warmed up. So if its not losing coolant or doing the champagne in the filler neck, maybe you got lucky ^_^.
