Ugh! The co-operators...the worst company that I have ever dealt with. I switched over to a broker years ago and have been as happy as a pig in **** ever since.

My first recommendation is to have a clean record ie no tickets or claims.
My second recommendation is to call as many companies as possible, get quotes, and then deal with a broker, you'll find that a broker will beat the best price you were quoted about 9 out of 10 times.

there is no free lunch with insurance

decide what you want , good rates or good coverage

if you want good rates , get a broker to find the cheapest insurance and bend over if you need to make a claim.

if you want good coverage , go to state farm and take adavantage of every price discount they offer based on your driving record etc.

just my 0.02$, but ya asked

My broker is Fabbro & Douglass in Richmond Hill, and the company I'm insured with right now is Economical Insurance. When I had my first FC, my broker switched me to Wawanesa - check them out, I've heard a lot of people say a lot of great things about them and back then they offered the cheapest rate for me. I switched back to Economical after the FC was taken off the policy.

I wouldn't mind paying $20 /month just for a piece of paper that says I have insurance. I'll never get into an accident where filing a claim is even important and the accidents that I would get into, can be settled outside of the insurance.

Check out Canadian Direct, if they serve Ontario. State Farm used to be good, but they lost me years ago when they repeatedly screwed up my automatic withdrawals, then cancelled my coverage for non-payment without so much as a phone call or letter. I unknowingly drove around without insurance for 2 months, then when I called them, they offered to reinstate me at 3x my old rate - for their f&*%-up(s).

Service is pretty much a thing of the past in the auto insurance industry, so I'm inclined to recommend shopping on price. When claim time comes, competitive pressure and maximizing shareholder value mean they'll all try to lowball your repair and claim anyway.

Broker. I'm 22, had a %50 fault accident and 1 speeding ticket on my record when I first called them and they still beat every other price I was quoted by at least $100. I find a broker is alot easier to deal with, mine actually drove to meet me so we could handle the paperwork because I couldn't get away from work long enough. That is service. Also you always talk to the same person, so after a while they know you by name, and they know what your doing with your insurance. I call in April and he automatically knows it's time to put full coverage back on the FB. There's no waiting on hold for someone that doesn't know whats going on, etc. It's a much more personal way to get screwed by the insurance companies, and if I'm gonna take it hard, it might as well be easy.

I stayed with Johnson Insurance thinking that I was getting a decent deal, when I realized that the whole $1300 a year per vehicle was getting a bit old and ridiculous. I stumbled upon www.insurancehotline.com and got 3 instant quotes online. The Personal and TD Meloche were very competitive on their group rates and I ended up going with Meloche and saved $1000 a year on all 3 cars. Might be worth a try....

You might want to try www.kanetix.ca as well. And then Belair Direct directly online quote.

How the heck do you pay that little? Meloche Monex (TD, but cheaper group rate division) is in the $700s for me for the minimum coverage required by law.
