Help!! Where can I get some R12 Refridgerant???
Hi all!!
Just wondering if anyone in Toronto/Mississauga area know where I can get some R12 AC refridgerant. I know that they are supposed to be obsolete and almost unobtainable, but thought it's worth a try....
Thanks for your help guys!

don't bother with actual R12. evacuate the system and put in a drop-in replacement. they work great, are more environmentally friendly, and you can legally do it yourself, very easily.
i got my stuff from http://glacier-gold-refrigerants.com/ for a good price (shipped from Canada; ask for their "quick charge" kit).
also if you check out Partsource they may also sell a drop-in replacement...

My dad deals with A/C systems all the time and he use's regular propane to fill old R12 systems. Escpecially if the system has a small leak.
The R12 is made up of small molicules (sp?) that can seep out of system, but the propane has larger molicules that wont seep out.
It works good and keeps ya cool!!

Propane is also closer to r-22 on the evap side than it is to r-12 so the metering valve tends to flood with it...
Use a drop in like 406a/409a/414b or at least mp-39....

Just figured i'd chime in. You can get recharge kits at Parts Source for R12.
They come with a can of leak stop and 2 cans of RedTek12, as well as the hose and connections to make the kit compatible to your car.

Bahaahaa......why does everyone think 1.5lbs of propane will "blow up".
My dad has filled countless cars, trucks and farm equipment with propane from the BBQ and they all work pretty good. Now mind you the propane A/C systems are never as cold as the R12, but it does work rather well.

I once saw a tractor with the glass blown out of the cab and the roof burnt off, reason #1, Farmer joe decided to charge it's a/c system with propane, something in the dash board sparked and ignited it..
Your life and your fathers has to be worth more than 20 bucks of real refrigerant, serioulsy its really dumb and bad advice to be telling people to use propane in their a/c systems, I have a journeyman ticket in refrigeration and air conditioning,so its not like I dont know what I am talking about here...Max

I just filled up my AC system w/ the Redtek stuff; it's really easy to use and it comes w/ everything you need!! only thing that I got stuck on was I did not know what the capacity of the AC system was since the sticker underneath my hood is very faded. took me a while to find this info on the forum but I eventually did.
For an FD, the stock R12 capacity is 1lb 12oz, which translate to roughly one can of the Redtek stuff (you can find the conversion from their website).
I went out for a cruise and it works REALLY well! But it's 10:30pm so it's pretty cool outside already. Tomorrow should reach 23 degrees; I'll let you guys know how well it works!
