best to deal with a broker. They will do the shopping for you. Not all companies will insure all cars for a variety of reasons. A broker will eliminate wasting time with companies that are very selective on what and who they insure. Insurance in Ont. is a la carte now. Which means you can select to have certain coverages waived to cut the cost down. Its ok as long as you don't get into an accident with the bare bones coverage.

I'm shopping around
I have been looking around and I am likely to go with the TD insurance offered through Mac Alumni program (my wife is an Alumni).
It's a long story, but it'll save me a pile of cash.
My present insurance is trying to rip me off, so I'm kicking them out.
They are about 200 $ cheaper on each car plus there is some other stuff I'll be saving that I won't talk about as it is an "off topic" long story.
I wil however probably insure my 7 with Silver wheels. This may not be feasible for some of you, but I don't drive my car a lot and I do have another car to drive around for most of what I do, so it a good option.
I hope this helps.

Anees who did you end up getting insurance with?
The buyer of my car seems to be having an issue with getting insurance on it. They either want it appraised or inspected. Not sure why he has to go through these hoops since the car has been registered for almost 2yrs.
I've already told him to go to a broker. I mentioned Wawanesa, silver wheels, and he has spoke to RBC.
Any other suggestions?

Ya, my FD is with Silver Wheels as well.
Follow-up Q: Those of you with Silver Wheels in ON, or elsewhere, just wondering if you guys get hit with an administrative renewal fee each year, on top of the actual policy pricing?
Silver Wheels is offered exclusively by a broker in QC, so no possibility to go elsewhere, and the first year I renewed, I noticed a extra fee they hadn't disclosed when I first signed up.
The next year, I thought I'd just cancel the insurance during winter, and re-buy it come spring, but they told me if I canceled it, they would refuse they insure me again next year. I'd challenge them but, well, this insurance is really cheap and gives the benefit of covering the car for it's actual appraised value. I just find it deceptive that they wouldn't be up front about the management fee and such...

An insurance company can't say "no" to anyone (on auto) without that person hitting specific decline rules filed with the government. However they can request an inspection of a vehicle at their leisure, the reason for this is to determine if a vehicle is modified, modified vehicles hit filed declination rules with many (most) insurance companies in Ontario.
Everyone this person is speaking to doesn't want to write the insurance, they're trying to find a way out of it.

All insurance companies will want an appraisal if you want collision. I just went though this recently and many of the so-called specialty insurance companies would not touch my FD for reasons like:
the car is not 20 years old.
we wrote off a few of these last year and were not taking on any more.
also, most wanted a clean five year driving history and over 21 years of age. (neither applied to me)
I went with a local appraiser which will save you money, as most will do it at your home.
The less appraiser has to drive equals cash in your pocket.
For a local appraisal:

Not all insurance companies will want an inspection (an appraisal is something different and only applies if you are getting an OPCF 19 endorsement which ups the value of the vehicle over the blue book value). Some that will not require this:
Wawanesa
Royal & Sun Alliance
Gore Mutual
You CAN be rejected from specialty insurers if your vehicle is not old enough.
You absolutely CAN NOT be denied a quote because they "wrote off a few" of your type of vehicle. This is a BS statement designed to discourage you from getting a quote. If you complain to RIBO, (and can prove it) you can have a $24,000 fine leveled against the broker who did this.
As for a clean record and your age. This isn't *exactly* true but may apply based upon certain conditions in your driving record.
Do not confuse an appraisal with a vehicle inspection. One will cost you money the other is free (and only one can be forced upon you to get coverage on the vehicle)

If you're with Bel-Air on your car now and you're over the age of 25, with no tickets in the past 3 years and no accidents in the past 6, you're overpaying. Bel-Air (a subsidiary of Intact) has some of the higher rates on the market at the moment.

At 19, generally a state farm/bel-air/td are some of the cheaper carriers because they get forced to take you. It is illegal to deny someone an insurance quote, and because bel-air is a direct writer, they only have their standard market and their facility carrier to offer. This means that young drivers calling in are getting regular market rates. (Which they "legally" qualify for, but no company wants to offer if they don't have to).
