Yes.
You break the law - they can give you a ticket. "Sure I had my stereo cranked at 2:00AM, and I was selling crack - but I was on my own property officer!" Not much of an arguement huh...

No.

And - according to the Surete Quebec, if you have the keys to the car, it is illegal to sit in the drivers seat of a car while drinking a beer. Even if the car is not running and you are on "private" property. I had a chat with a police officer about that.

Of course they can.

And it's generally not a good idea to tell an officer of the law "f you get off my property", especially if you are activly breaking the law. I'm far from an expert, but as I understand it, there are several laws and clauses that allow them on your property without a warrant. If you are breaking the law, and there is obvious visual or other proof, they can enter.

As much as it would be nice to be able to tell the cops & government representatives to butt out of our lives, I don't think there's much we can do to stop them. I believe a police officer has the authority to be on your property if he has reason to believe that something illegal is taking place there. Several years ago a farmer in my hometown was hit with an impaired driving charge for operating his tractor in his own field while under the influence. Some nice person called the cops on him. A very long time ago, my brother was also charged with care & control while under the influence. He rode his snowmobile to a bar, while inside someone tried to hot wire it unsuccessfully. When he came out he couldn't get the machine started because the wiring had been damaged. He was trying to figure it out & a cop came along.

Well, I'm glad if the police can nail you for that stuff... I'd be very annoyed if they let someone off, like they did some kid I know not too long ago. Caught driving drunk, without insurance, and the cop just let him go without a warning. WTF? Of course he was going to do it again, risking other people's lives, without even the insurance to help his victims out.

The purpose of insurance is not only to cover the damage to your car and someone else's car. The purpose is that if you permanently injur someone, and they can no longer work to support their family, your insurance will compensate their loss of income. Without insurance, they might not get enough to survive, and you'll be giving every extra cent you make to them for a very very long time. So to those boys driving around without insurance on this board, and I know there are a few of you, just think about it.

since we are talking about oil filters, what type of gasket do you guys use for the oil pan drain plug? you know, that little metal ring.

i tried to get a genuine one from Mazda, but they wanted like $10.
i hear Fram has one, but it only has 89% of the sealing ability of the stock one.

i'm thinking of doing a study of all of them and comparing results.

Little metal ring? Mine is plastic. I wonder who put that there and how the seal has been affected.

The car is not insured. He shouldn't be letting his friend drive it.

Its illegal to have a car towed without insurance or legal plates (technically your plates are ILLEGAL if you have no insurance, even if the sticker is valid, its only valid with valid insurance!)

Its also illegal to be in a driver seat of a car without insurance / valid license *technically*. And the crime wasnt committed on private property, theres no magic home-free if you get away from a cop to avoid a ticket.

And yes, a cop can give you a ticket later on, you're lucky you didnt get more severe tickets, like evading a police officer, or dangerous driving.

Stupid drivers deserve stupid tickets, but get a lawyer and fight it, you can get very lucky in court.

And get insurance and a valid license, idiot.

I was coming home with chinese food at 11:30pm. I made a rolling stop and got $151 and 3 points. It sucks, especially since I wasn't driving "recklessly". But that one I will swallow because he caught me.

The one I really hate happened to me two weeks ago. I was driving along at about 10pm with my firend John. We were driving along and I notice a cop cruiser in my rearview mirror. No cherries, nothing. We're the only two cars on the road, and I'm obeying all traffic rules (amazingly enough, something I tend to do even in my 7).

I tell John that the cops probably running my plates, but I don't care since I have nothing on my record, I'm breaking no laws, and I don't see any reason the officer would have a problem with my car. So I turn onto Fisher Rd. (for you Ottawa guys, she followed me from Carling/Kirkwood to halfway up Fisher, changing lanes at the same time and everything). The cop follows. It's been quite a while now and I'm getting sick of being tailed, so I turn down a side street. The cop continued, but pulled over just after the intersection where I turned to wait for me.

When I re-emerged from the neighborhood, the cop put the cherries on and pulled me over. She searched my whole car, including inside my toolboxes and under the spare tire. She called in backup. She asked to see both our IDs and all my papers. She asked me if I "had any friends in the neighborhood where I turned" then told me I was evading an officer.

Eventually she let me go, she had no choice. I didn't do anything wrong, I had nothing illegal of any sort in my car or on me, and I didn't give anyone attitude. I call it harassment, but I'm basically not going to do anything about it because I was too zoned-out to ask for anyone's name or badge number.

It sucks. How can you be told you're evading an officer who didn't have her lights on or make it apparent that she was trying to get my attention for doing nothing wrong in the first place!

Still pissed about the rolling stop one though. The cop followed me all the way home, through another stop sign where I *actually* stopped, and pulled me over at home without his goddamn flashers on either! Being the only two cars on the road, and me with a clean record up until that point, you would think he'd give a warning or something.

Pigs.

Jon

My understanding is that a cop cannot search your vehicle without reasonable cause, unless you give them permission. eg. If she saw a crack pipe on the floor she would have a reason to search the car. Maybe it's time to get a new plate with some new numbers.

None. I fail to see why I would need one. Lots of other cars don't have them and oil doesn't leak out of my car. BTW: If you order the gaskets for the coolant pipes that attach to the TII turbo, they give you the same one that is specified for the drain plug gasket, but it's not the right peice.
