Hello Folks!
Hello Everyone!
Long time Z fanatic, thinking about switching teams as it were. I've always loved the FD, and having owned 4 different Z's I know the value of such forums, especially when considering a purchase
What's the work on the 1994 RX7 at Seven Speed Motors in Etobicoke? I went to see it, a little rough around the edges and what not, is $20k too high for a 1 owner, dealer serviced car? Light surface rust forming on the rear left wheel arch, 4-5 decent dings, but overall a fairly clean car.

Thanks guys, that's about what I figured. It's in mediocre shape on the outside, interior is nice enough though.

Er, on that note - do you guys have any good ideas as to where I should be looking to find an FD? I'm not convinced I want to head south of the border yet. Any classifieds I should check (other than the ones here) and which vendors are good to window-shop?
I'm so used to Nissans, I'm all confused and backwards :-(

A stock FD has little value to me but obviously it does for others. I would rather purchase one that has been modified but every one had their preferences.

Here's a low price, lightly modded one in the for sale section. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=979104

Who are some of the good vendors? I like to have an idea of what it's going to cost to mod, I already found rx7.com, who else should I look at? I like to see what's available.
I already fired off an email to Dave Maffet about that RX-7 he's selling, real stand up guy, sent me photos right away.
What about the Qc one with the 5th gear grind? What goes into fixing that?

That would require a trans rebuild or you could baby 5th gear until it goes and buy a used trans. It depends on what your looking for but check the vendor section of this forum. At least you got the right car, there's tons of support for FD's. Mazdatrix.com for stock and aftermarket parts. I always order the OEM bits I need from them. Racingbeat.com. I think RE-Speed has a couple FD parts but they mostly deal with older stuff. Sam can do custom stuff too. That's here in London. Google will be your friend.

a 5th gear grind if that's the only problem with the trans is actually fixable without a complete trans rebuild. It sits in the back of the trans and can usually be accessed without ripping the whole thing apart.
Maybe even in the car but I wouldn't bother, it's probably harder than it is to pull it out and fix it right.
Used FD transmissions are under $500. The car might be fine with just fresh fluid too. Good fluid can fix many transmission problems. Syncros can grind for years before they go, one of my old DSM's used to have the worst 2nd gear grind ever and aside from the noise it was fine for as long as I owned the car.
I can think of less than a dozen FD's that I'd be willing to pay $20k for, and I bet none of them are for sale. You should anticipate spending $10-$15k for a good one.
As far as an FD vs a Z33 or Z32:
FD's aren't very reliable. If you can work on your own stuff, they're easy to keep up and not that bad for repairs, especially compared to nissans. They're really complicated. The FD handles better and drives nicer than almost anything on the road. The interiors are fantastic to look at but made from the cheapest 90's plastic mazda could find, so everything breaks if it's treated roughly. The driveline (aside from the motor) is reasonably simple and easy to work on. The twin turbo setup is a 20 year old work of art, it's great but not going to be honda reliable.
Z32: probably the least reliable japanese car ever made, right after the GTO. Compared to an FD, a Z32TT is a bit faster, a bit easier to make even faster yet, much heavier and less nimble, have nicer interiors and a huge aftermarket. If it breaks, it's gonna suck. And it's a nissan, so it'll break. It's also super complicated like the FD.
Z33: Modern, reliable, slow. I don't like the simplistic interior but many others do. They handle pretty well and it's easy to improve them even more in that department, but it'll never be on par with what you can do with an FD. Tiny inside like FD's too. Expensive to make horsepower due to a lack of displacement or turborcharger.
others you might want to think of:
C5 Corvettes, 04+ mustangs, R32/R33 skyline GT-R.

Very insightful replies thanks guys. The 5th gear grind is on this car here: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-rx-7-1993-2002-vehicles-107/mazda-rx-7-1993-touring-red-good-shape-970872/
I would still consider it. I've owned two Z31s, one Z32 N/A which I LOVED and now my Z33. I'm certainly not opposed to working on my own car, I generally love it (when it's not ***** cold out). I've always had a soft spot for the FD and I'm quite happy to see you guys are as friendly as the Z crowd is. The problem with the Z crowd is that there aren't many of us this side of the border who are also sane.

How would you feel about a twin turbo 1 owner low km 350z built by AAM in the US with a new motor ported to 3.8liters, all receipts and dynos making 530rwhp @ 13psi reliably.
20k. PM me for details

^^^ Interesting thought, but I'm afraid I like my Non turbo Z33, I'm not looking to replace it with another, but something different altogether is what I'm after I think....

I have a 1993 FD with 52,000 miles - all stock except for Apexi intake, racing beat exhaust, rims/tires. Comes with new Tein adjustable coilover kit still in box. Car is a touring -red with tan interior. At 42 - getting to old to get in and out of this car.
