Garage Floor Coatings

Been thinking of my garage floor these past few days, its been looking real bad for a year or so now and needs refinishing, I originally used "Rustolem Expoy Coating" but I think it was water based, not a good idea with the wifey getting half the garage in the winter months with her snow and ice caked car. Once her car warmer up to the point were the crap melted off it would lift the paint off the floor. So its time to look for a better product and do it right this time

The only place I could find that had the good epoxy floor coating (not water based) was in the states (http://www.epoxy-coat.com/index.php)
@ around $400 shipped to my door with eveything you need to do the job.

Any thoughts, suggestions, hook-ups, I would sooner deal with local a business

I think the best option for a real used garage is garage floor tiles.

they can be cleaned washed spilled hot oil and look clean afterwards.

The initial investment is aprox two times, but it will look much nicer and the keep up is easier.

That being said im too cheap at the moment to do that, so in spring i will just recover with the water based epoxy.

Jim,

I painted mine with a kit from home depo. They now have a better epoxy then the one I used.

It had a few steps. Concrete cleaner, etcher, sealer then epoxy. I don't know if I went to cheap with the epoxy (should I have gone thicker?) but it lasted two years and currently now it has peeled like yours did at the wifes spot pretty badly. Were I store the rx7 it still looks pretty good when I wash the floors.

If I have to paint it again I am not sure how to go about it since I think it may have to be sand blasted and painted. To get it done professionally is pretty expensive and I will probable not stay in this house anyway.

I looked at a few tile's and other options but the idea of water and such getting trapped underneath is not appealing.

At work we have some stuff that they coat the floors with and I would love to get my hands on that stuff. Pretty tuff stuff.

I used the Home Depot epoxy kit at the shop here. It is standing up pretty well. But I don't have the salt problem - I wash it off right away which is easy when you have a drain...

I would love to put down that epoxy but half my floor is pitted so I'm going to have to deal with that first.

Look in to hydraulic cement, available at HDepot, for filling pits and cracks prior to the etching step in laying any performance floor.

For sure on my next house. I think you will need some extra epoxy.

POR-15!

The stuff is super-tough and is impervious to any sort of chemicals, oil, salt, water, etc...

they have different formulations of POR-15, depending on your application. concrete floors is one application.
many people have used it on garage floors.

http://www.marine-paint.com/por-15-concrete.htm

the company also sells something called "floor armor".

I have used por 15 on metal before and its great stuff
if their floor paint is as good as their rust paint it should be very good!
will have to look into this one.
I have a few oil stains which worry me, I have a feeling that the finish
will just peal off
thanks for the por tip

POR-15 works very well on a concrete floor. Just make sure to mix in a bit of sand otherwise the floor is slick afterwards.

Have you used it? The kit states it comes with sand to add into the mixture, I can't seem to link with the product on the CDN site....just wondering if it's even available in Canada .....

I've not purposely used POR-15 on my floor, but the accidental coating I managed is still there after 5 years. A few customers of mine have POR-15 on their shop floor and it seems to hold up under forklifts.

I just recently coated my shop floor with an "epoxy" paint from Home Depot. I forget the brand it but was a grey "epoxy" worth about $30 a can. Only a bit of use on it so far, but it seems to be holding up. Of course I say "epoxy" in quotes because it was only one part...

The POR15 concrete stuff still comes with a degreaser for the oil stains. Their degreaser works pretty darn good too so I wouldn't worry about peeling off.
