Found a 2001 Bathurst R in Montreal

The find of a lifetime:

2001 Mazda RX-7 Limited Edition Bathurst R Coupe - City of Toronto Cars For Sale - Kijiji City of Toronto Canada.

Now I won't be waiting another 3-4 years. Does it look legit?

I'd like to know how he done it. We had guys try to get R34's out here and fail miserably.

I'd be curious too - only legal if brought if brought in for off-road use (track) only, in which case it not only isn't registered, it never can be, even when it hits the normal 15 year limit where it could be imported legally - or it was brought in and registered using an older VIN.

In which case if it used an older VIN, it wouldn't be 'legit'. I've heard of guys doing that with other cars, but its still hard to get them in the country.

It seems pretty unlikely... maybe it is an older car with updated parts. Most people wouldn't know what to look for if you just threw a few Series 8 bits on it. The ad pics are pretty small.

I'd love to get a look at a real Bathurst R or the Spirit R in person someday. Maybe I'll just have to build my own, like some of the other guys here.

We are only a few years away from those models being eligable for import. Just open a tax free savings account and drop a few bux in it a month. You'll have more than enough by the time it comes availiable. You laugh but it bought my truck, and its going to buy my next car once the truck has run its course.

It's not that hard to do. If you have a connection in Japan, they can fudge the VIN. Once you get it into the country with a fake VIN of an older RX-7, the rest is paperwork (easy).

One word: Quebec.
I love that province, but for better or for worse you have to know there is a lot of stuff that just doesn't work the same way as the rest of Canada. (especially when it comes to transportation) It's the only province that could effectively change what was once a salvage title and make it clean again, amongst other things. I'm 100% sure it's legit in Quebec. . . . . .but that doesn't nesassarily make it legit elsewhere. If you're truly interested, Do your homework to avoid "surprises". I have dealt with out of province cars quite a bit, and still learn new lessons time to time. Good luck

I can't see anything about that car that makes me think it's a Bathurst.

Aftermarket Recaro's, a new steering wheel and an aftermarket front end do not a Bathurst R make.

All I see is a regular old FD being called a Bathurst R.

If I'm missing something, someone please point it out.

This has been up for a while now... I'm wondering how they got it here as in the US they would have crushed them like what they did to the R33's and R34's used in the Fast in the Furious. Unless is was chopped and brought as pieces and built back in 2001 with a new vin, I am not sure how this works haha.
Nice car tho!!

As someone who has imported a JDM car myself and done all the paperwork on both the Japanese and the Canadian side: I could have registered my car as any year of vehicle that I wanted, no one asked any questions or attempted at any point to verify the year of my car.

Interesting! Never thought it worked like that! Thanks for clearing that one up for me Geoff! So this "Bathurst" just could be as real and just as fake.

I could believe it's a 2001, it's easy to fudge the paperwork.

As for it being a Bathurst R, which is a very special edition FD I'm highly suspect. I see nothing about the car to indicate it's anything other than a regular old FD of uncertain year.

Off the top of my head and I'm too lazy/at work to check up on it, but I believe the Bathurst R has (amongst other things) a special 110L fuel tank that eliminates the spare tire well (which is clearly shown as being there in his photos).

I may be wrong about the tank, as I said, too lazy to check.

Ok, I lied.

I found some time to slack off and check some stuff

The fuel tank thing is wrong. That was on the competition cars in 95 that actually competed in the races.

The actual cars have distinctive Bathurst R badging, special fog lights (which I can't seem to find a picture of), adjustable suspension. If you look at the link below the official mazda images also show a CF interior (which is pretty sexy).

Mazda RX-7 Type R Bathurst

With the original VIN, you could've checked with Mazda to see wether it really was a Bathurst edition, but since a VIN swap was made, it's all up in smoke and it lost it's statut forever. And, that's only if it ever truly was a Bathurst to begin with...

Ad still around, looks like no one is biting on the dubious "Bathhurst R". With no legal way it could be, and no evidence it is the real thing, he's going to have to sell it as if it were a '92 JDM - maybe a nice one, but not $18,000 nice.
