East Vancouver? Nice place?
Hi there guys, i know that this is a little offtopic (not about RX7's and all) But you may remember that i posted about moving to vancouver! Well, it's happening and in 4 days!!!
I *THINK* i have found a place to stay, but it is located in East Vancouver??? Could you guys tell me if this is a nice suburb or not??? As i don't know much about vancouver, i don't want to move into a crappy suburb!
Any advise or help you guys could give me would be most appriciated!!!!!
Regards,
ben

which area exactly(street). Most of the east side is not that great, downtown east side is the worst. We should hook up when I get out there, I will be living in vancouver as well, again. I leave at the end of the month though

I've been researching places to live in Vancouver for months, since I'm moving there end of August. The impression I get is if you can afford to avoid east van, then by all means avoid it. It's not one of the nicer areas of town. Not saying it's awful either.
You can check out crime by district or by neighbourhood on the vancouver police department's site.

Anything bigger than 600 sq feet that is close to town is expensive. If it is not expensive - you don't want to live there. After a week of house hunting, we realized that our only realistic choice was to live far and commute.

You're moving to Vancouver without a job first? Good luck.
Why would anyone leave Australia... Sheesh... After Vancouver, I'd like to go there for a year.
Anyway, why don't you try sharing an apartment? Go to http://vancouver.craigslist.org/ and look under housing. I've seen some great ads, but all of this stuff is for before I can make it there.

Well i have enough funds to keep me going for atleast 6-7months, so if i can't find a job within that time, i don't think vancouver is for me Being an experienced IT professional and also food and beverage supervisor, i'm hoping i wont have much trouble!!
Thanks for the link, i'll have a look at it now
I don't have any problems with Australia, but i think its something that needs to be done, experience other cultures and either relise what your missing out on out there, or relise what you've taken for granted

What part of IT are you in specifically? A friend of mine is in IT in Vancouver, and his company, McKessen, is looking for people to train physicians in the use of medical IT... It's a job that requires that you travel throughout North America for half of each month though.

Well i've had vast experience within the networking sector, drafting/proposing/installing network solutions, but recently have moved towards customer relations, account management/business development side of things... I have more of a passion for the people side of things, hence the hospitality experience aswell.

Well, use that "aussie charm" to put together a decent group of people that like to go out and do things, so that I'm not bored once I hit Vancouver!
Anyway, if that McKessen thing would be of any interest to you, let me know and I can pass your resume on to the right person.

Depends what part of East Van. I used to live on a cul-de-sac (Marshall) just off of the Trout Lake park. Because the Skytrain blocked off the end of the street it was like our own private enclave for the neighbours and I. However, just a few blocks away there was another park full of hypodermic needles, nasty ******, and gangs killing each other. One of my neighbours 2 blocks down was stabbed to death as he sat in his car parked in front of his house. Supposedly his wife and kid saw the whole thing.
I'd say most of East Van is a bit scuzzy. It's not really a 'suburb' but a residential area just south of East Hastings, which is Vancouver's Skid Row. When I moved to a place near Vancouver General a few blocks off Broadway, my comfort level - and rent - went up considerably.
Basically in Vancouver the general rule is you get what you pay for.

Vancouver is a great town, but stay away from the east side of downtown if you can. It's a pretty bad area.
I am driving out there as soon as my car is out of the body shop.
Since we are all new to the city we should get together. I have a friend that lives there who could let us know what bars are good.
Vancouver has some amazing women!

I'll be out there in early September. My car is being shipped, so as of yet I'm unsure when it will depart/arrive. Hopefully I am not too long without a car!
