Differnces between Jdm FD3S and Domestic FD3S

hey guys, i got a 92 FD3S on the way to canada and am a little concerned with the laws pending with imports. i want to know if the 93-95 fd's have the same specs as the 92. The reason being so i can just buy parts from the 93 rx-7 to keep my 92 rx-7 legal in canda, and not have problems with the headlights and whatever else. also who else is in the same boat as me?

any comments would be muchly apreciated. thanks

I do beleive if the car is 15 years or older it is exempt from the riv program. ie no drl's no rebar, should be legal not to sure if anything has changed. www.riv.ca

Do you mind me asking what it is costing you for your FD when it's all said and done? We hear a lot of things, but the definative answer isn't widely available.

im aware that as of now the car will be perfectly legal in canada. however theres many rumors that canada is trying to change these laws, such as the headlights are not S.A.E approved. so i just want to make sure that i can use the domestic parts for my jdm.
thanks for the replys, keep them comin too

In order to get any JDM FD into Canada it has to be at least 15 years old to its registration date.

Almost all of the 93 FD parts are interchangable with the 92 fd's from Japan. Actually alot of the 93 FD's in Canada will have a 92 registration date so that won't be a worry for you.

There is nothing different about the JDM FDs and the USDM FD's.....except the steering wheel is on the right side.
Mechanically they are all the same.

The headlights themselves would be ECE, and luckily for you Canada recognises both ECE and DOT compliant headlights.

HOWEVER

They will say your lights fail. Why? They do. Your lights inner reflectors will be set up to aim high on the left and low on the right, to illuminate road signs while driving on the left without bliding traffic on the right.

Because traffic in Canada drives on the right, our lights' beam patterns are low to the left, high on the right (that's where the road signs are, after all).

So you'll have to remove the headlamps and replace them with units bought here in Canada. Nothing major, just like changing a burnt-out regular 6024sealed beam lamp.

There are some performance parts that are different such as down pipes which on the JDM models are bent to go around the steering shaft, but yes pretty much everything is exactly the same.

in order to get the car into the country it has to be 15 years old to the month it was built however this is only the start of possible problems.

once in the country depending on where you live you may have some issues with provincial inspections requiring certain things such as 3rd brake light, daytime running lights, dot glass and lamps but it all depends on whos doing the inspection and what not

The DOT glass shouldn't be a problem. Japan adheres to ECE specs and Canada recognises both DOT and ECE. If the inspector insists on DOT glass, s/he's just being a *****.

Not only is it bent but it also doesnt have a pre-cat on it like the North American FD's have.

Do you have a car en route already? If so when does your car land?

well i was pming snrub about this but i may as well just post it
the cost of the car was around 10,300 ( this includes the car, taxes, passing customs, pending on what u take to ship to canada, includes shipping)
300ish to get the car from vancouver to calgary
100ish to get the car registered
so ill be paying around 11g to own the car without any tune-up

Are you flying down to drive the car back or getting it delivered to your door?

I'm still shopping for one and will hopefully have it landed around the same time. I'm planning on flying down and driving the car back to save some money.

Which company are you going through?

When did you buy that one? I have been watching that site for a while and haven't seen it yet. That is from www.hasnihon.com. They are one of the main brokers for importconcern.

Thats a nice looking FD. I live 10min from calgary, you will have a nice open drive from Calgary to the hat.

Congrats on the car.

I've been looking at doing the same thing. What grade is the car? I'm looking st spend around the same amount of money, and also from importconcern, Let me know of your experiences. You must be pretty excited. I believe importconcern has sold about 4 or 5 fd's already, I'd be very interested in knowing what it's like for them.

rebbecko18 YO R THE MAN. LOL A little while ago we had this thread goin about a imported fd that pissed me off cause it was listed at 19K and it stirred up a much bigger chain of reactions then i had thought possible. I'm glad u posted and showed that u can buy one and have it imported for a reasonable price. Congrats man i'm honestly jealous.

I've been considering importing an FD, but it seems that the prices are too erratic right now. They range from $5000 to $25000. Its hard to tell what your getting from pictures and price alone.

Import Concern tends to select very nice examples of cars for import. I myself use Redline Imports out of edmonton. I've purchased (or helped purchase) a few cars from them in the past. No complaints with either.

4kruzn from time to time flys to japan to select cars and inspect/drive them there. They command a higher premium, but their cars tend to be quality.

I get my imports now from a local guy who mostly brings them over for himself and not sale. Thats the best kind because its for him and not for a quick buck.

Im just kinda rambling now....

thanks andru.....now dont get me wrong but its 11g to get in my posetion, that doesnt mean that im gona turn the key and be on my way and have 0 problems with it, but im really hope that tuning it up isnt gona throw me back another 5g more before i can drive it. and to anyone that is planing to import into canada, i would recomend staying away from the heavily modded fd's becuase the government is worried about modded imports. there has already been 2 skylines that are not allowed in the the country becuase of the mods done to them. let me know if any of u guys do actualy import one, it would be great to talk to another jdm fd owner once i get mine.
