clutch ..for an N/A..suggestions
I know the clutch is slippin so i'm lookin for suggestions on brands for a stock n/a..I want to get it local(Ottawa..up to Toronto)..gonna replace the throw out bearing too..I don't race or drift..but like to punch it once in awhile ,just to liven up the drive!..(no ..I will not buy your turbo engine..lol)..any info appreciated guys,thanks.. ..misterstyx69

few choices for clutch:
- Mazda OEM (~$130 w/o PP)
- Centerforce: they sell THREE different clutch sets, the top of the line being the dual friction model, about $400. don't know the price of the other 2, but i assume they are cheaper. Ontario dealer locations here http://www.centerforce.com/dealerloc...db.txt#ONTARIO

- Clutch Masters: they actually sell SIX "stages" of clutch sets. their OEM replacement clutch is about $180 and comes with PP and all hardware. i have that in my car right now, i think it is pretty much like the stock clutch. they have pricing on their website: http://www.clutchmasters.com/shop/?p...0752&MakeID=81

I have the act street strip clutch with a heavy duty pressure plate.... i absolutly love it...
it's quite a bit stiffer then stock, but i got used to that within two shifts...

i had an ACT street/strip in my 90 N/A and it was great ...made the pedal feel a little bit stiffer and grabbed like nothing. i even ran that clutch in my TII Hybrid conversion with my N/A tranny and stock flywheel with 10 lbs of boost and it even held up to that.

ACT hands down, search for threads on the Centerforce and you will see almost nothing but problems, very few have lasted very long.

I've got the Racing Beat street/strip HD clutch disc with a stock pressure plate. I would highly recommend ditching the stock pressure plate (I kept mine because in stock class I had to)- my '91 na is only making about 20hp over stock, and while the RB clutch performs better than the stock one did, the stock pressure plate doesn't offer enough clamping force; for launching the car at solo2 events, I find I have to keep the revs down in the 2500-3000 range, even though 3500 is about ideal for a good launch. Any more, and the clutch just slips instead of breaking traction at the drive wheels (mind you this is with r-compound tires). Same happens with the car in motion - for example if I spin, I can usually turn it into a full 360 by powering thru the spin in first gear, but the clutch will still slip even though the rears have already broken traction and are spinning. When I pit, the car will waft the aroma of burned clutch for a while. Match it with the RB street/strip pressure plate and it'd probably be good tho'.
I have heard good things about the ACT street/strip clutch/pressure plate from a fellow autocrosser, using it in an AWD Talon making 250+ hp, though nothing first hand in a RX-7 application. The ACT clutches have the plus of being readily available at many autoparts stores.

yeah, i should have mentioned i would be picking up the clutch with the RB PP also (and possibly RB lightweight flywheel).
my clutch right now seems to be fine but feels a bit "sloppy". i think my throwout bearing is starting to go also.
i have done plenty of high rpm clutch drops and it doesn't seem to slip at all. in fact i didn't notice any slipping of the clutch at autocross with the toyo ra-1s. when i did a 6k launch the tires just spun.
but the clutch master unit is just an OEM replacement, and i have no idea how worn it is until i take the transmission down. might as well get a better clutch and PP...

i have the light weight steel rb flywheel, act s/s clutch and HD pressure plate... i absolutly love it.. been auto-xing this combo for two years now with no problem

k... well i only have about 500kms on mine, so i wont comment on grip and stuff. all i can say is stay away from the extreme pp unless you have a perfect working hydro sys. i ended up replacing everything... master, slave, ss line, fork(just to be safe). after install my old hydro sys lasted for less than ten pumps before it turned the o-ring on the slave cylinder inside out.. ive have heard good things about the heavyduty pp though.

and yup, i quickly found out 6k is no good for launch, heh.
well seems like everyone is praising the ACT. it's available at dealers in Canada too, so that is another plus.

I dunno what you guys are talking about with launching that low in the rev range. I've got the stock clutch and pressure plate with a stock flywheel and I launch at the auitocrosses at 6000-7000 rpm typically if it's on concrete, less for tarmac. No wheelspin, just some gentle clutch slipping while I feed the power in. I get good consistently fast launches that way with no bogging. I can't get even close to that good a launch below 4000. That's on street tires too.
I've often wondered what's the best clutch, as I want to upgrade whenever mine dies, and there's some good infor here, as it's always best to hear from those who've tried them.

Put a "Stage 2" in my 87 NA a couple of years ago. Smooth take up untill about half engaged, and then fully engages somewhat abruptly. This is great on the track where shifting is usually followed by full throttle, but it takes a little practice to be smooth on the street, however I've never had any slippage on the street or track. Don't do a lot of drag race launches so can't really comment, but I expect the only slippage you will get is the spinning of the rear tire.

Well I've pretty well got the "youth" sucked out of me..(see profile)..so I'm not goin to have the car "done to the nuts"..it's gonna be a Daily driver ..and all I want is when I downshift and punch it that the revs don't go up.Right now the car takes forever to accelerate,because of a slip in the clutch..I am limited by budget and over-all health ..just lookin for something that will last two years..I'm not drifting ,or tryin to rocket launch a grenade!!!(1/4 mile)..just wanna have the car hook up..spin tires ,once in awhile..like a "regular car"..lol

If you're just lookin' for stock repalcement that'll last a few years, go to partsource and get the kit. For my FB it cost me $200+tax, and that was even before I knew Frank worked at a PartSource!
It works fine. When I rebuild the engine for more power I'll put a better clutch in, but the el-cheapo PartSource kit is more than enough for what I've got now, and the price ain't bad. just make sure you ask for the kit that has 4 pieces: Disc, Plate, Bearing AND centering tool. Aparently they have two different ones according to the person I talked to, that one is cheaper and gives you the centering tool to boot.

if you select "convertible" in the model selection it will give you the exact same choices...not quite sure why they have two categories, probably just because they are different models. the clutches they sell though are the exact same for NA and vert.
