Classic Insurance?

Just wondering what the Ontario / GTA guys are using for insurance companies? I'm looking to plate my car as a classic and have some time to look around. I will only put 3-4k on the car each year as it will not be my daily driver. What company are you guys using?

Hagerty is best hands down. I pay $212 a year for my 85 gsl-se. No limit on km, car has to be worth at least 5k.

I'm going to make the assumption that they use an appraisal that you provide to judge the value of the vehicle?

I just looked into hagerty online for a quote. 1988 Rx7 10AE if insured for 14000. $415 a year. Driving it 3500kms. Thats a good deal. And they just take your word on value? it says you do NOT need and appraisal.

I tried to get Hagerty and they said that your other car needs to be less than 10 years old too,so they don't think you are trying to "pull a fast one" on them.

Does car have to be 25 years old? Mine is a 92, not quite there yet.

With Hagerty, your everyday drive doesn't have to be less than 10 years old unless they changed the insurance policy. When I got my 85 rx7 3 years ago my Camry was a 95.

Just got off the phone with Hagerty and they will insure RHD JDM cars with a stock setup and they must 25 years old minimum. On a side not they will insure my 1990 TII valued @ $5000 for $181.

I recently just signed up with Hagerty. Very happy with them!

$635CAN/year (full coverage) for 3 cars... 71 Datsun 240Z, 88 Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD and my 88 RX-7 10AE.

Works out to about $17 a month per vehicle...

I have a 4000KM limit, but between the 3 cars thats fine with me

I have my 85 rx7 insured with Hagerty and I don't have a km limit. Does it have to do with 3 cars? Do they get the odometer reading every year? I never heard about this this with Hagerty.

Sorry, should have clarified... its 4000km for each vehicle, and its a general average mileage question...

I'll have to wait until renewal time to see if they ask for an odometer reading but I suspect not as they didn't ask when I signed up.

Now that I am hopefully old enough (26) to qualify for classic car insurance I want to look into this.

Does Hagerty have options for essentially a daily driven summer classic car? I drive my 82 FB Rx7 quite often in the summer.. work, road trips, daily driving etc. Perhaps as much as 6000km.

I am going after anything that can save me $$ on the insane car insurance rates here in Ontario.

If it will be your daily driver, I doubt Hagerty will touch it. They assume regular errands around town are done with another vehicle. And your classic is only for joy rides.

In your case, consider getting regular insurance for the summer months only. And then parking it and pull the insurance off for the winter months. That should cut your insurance bill in half per year.

I'm 28, they ask you what type of driving you will be using the car for... daily driving is an option. id think the more miles you tell them the rates get adjusted..

They also ask if you have a another daily driver and who its insured with, so if ya have another car with another company they see your toy as a pleasure use vehicle.

Go to there web site, do the online quote, my final cost after I was approved was within $10 of the quote... if ya have question just call them, there very nice and helpful.

Great thanks for the info.

I'm pissed off at insurance in Ontario, it is getting nuts. Mine renews in April and it is now $3300 a year. It went up 18% compared to last year. I can't stand supporting the massive industry that it has become.

I have a 100% clean driving record.

//End rant

For $3300 worth of insurance, you could afford to buy another car for $3000 (daily driver) and get Hagerty insurance on your RX7 for $300.

In a few years, you'll be money ahead....I'm just sayin.

Ontario apparently has the highest car insurance rates in the country - due to a lot of fraudulent claims activity. Why do people think its somehow ok to steal from corporations - because you ultimately end up stealing from every driver in the province.

Hagerty. Cheap. No appraisal required. And you can buy flat bed road side assistance through them.

Been with them for 3 years now no issues and I set my replacement value, sent photos and listed my upgrades done at the time, no issues....after taxes and their road side plan I'm just over 680 a year from paying close to 2k. previously.
