Calgary Pick'n'Pull dirty little secrets

Actually, "dirty little secrets" isn't a completely accurate description because most of this info is not a secret per se--- most of us know the business practices of this place. But while their prices remain reasonable (for now) and their service reps are not rude, some of their business ethics (or lack thereof) bear reminding--- especially if you buy a part and expect a refund if it comes up useless:

1. They have an EXCHANGE OR IN-STORE CREDIT ONLY policy. It sez so on every sales slip they issue. NO CASH, DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD REFUNDS, as you'd (rightfully) expect in the rest of the free world.

For those unaware of this sleazy policy the fact that this info is not revealed until after you've made your purchase and received your sales slip renders this UFI (useless ******* information). Whatever you do, don't ever lose this in-store credit slip they issue to you--- that's exactly what they're counting on.

To Pick'n'Pull's credit, they do also have a tiny little sign stating the above exchange/credit policy, but it's discretely displayed below the till and out of immediate view (especially if someone is in line in front of you, blocking the sign). This strategy appears to be designed to skirt legal issues while not hurting sales volume. This sign should be large and prominently displayed to clients as they enter the lobby before removing parts and paying the $1.00 admission fee.

2. Speaking of which--- if you've entered this establishment in the last year you already know about the barrel they bend you over to extract a dollar from you on your way in. Yeah, I know. It's "only a buck, quitcherbitchin'." But it's the principle. Nowhere else does the business charge a fee to (ostensibly) cover the cost of operating insurance. Now that they have us on this slippery slope, look for this fee to increase to say, $5 in the next few years or so. This wouldn't surprise me at all.

3. Many parts, particularly engine and/or drivetrain items, are subject to a "core charge." That's right--- a business that does not rebuild these items wants you to fork over a fee that's refundable only if you bring back the part that you're removing from your own car and give it to them. Again, don't lose your sales slip! What next? an enviro fee when you buy used tires from them? Deducting the same "enviro fee" from the already low price they pay you when you junk your car at their establishment? Ooops, better not give 'em any ideas...

4. The above "core charge" is only refundable for a period of 90 days. This is important if you buy say, a cylinder head for your winter beater (as I did) but don't intend to rebuild it right away. I think I'll take this head back and get my core charge back and my "in-store credit"--- at least the in-store credit has no expiry date--- yet.

since the name and managemnt change i've never really liked supporting them. yet the only competition they have is bucks, which is nothing more then a handful of cars and a several stacks of crushed cars swaying in the wind above ur head.
i guess i'll be shoppign the graveyards all winter for a few pieces, prolly end up over paying for the scrap metal anyways.

If anybody has any P&P in-store credit that needs to be used up tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 31st) would be a good bet--- they're currently having another 50% off everything sale.

I went there today and picked up a power steering rack for the wife's Sentra, an exhaust pipe for my Mazda pickup, and an ashtray and spare tire (complete with rim) for just over $40 including tax. I still have almost $20 worth of credit left--- credit that was accumulated by bringing back items that I paid regular price for previously.

Yup, and someone already scored the ignitors. For those interested it's an '83 (GSL package) that's mostly intact.
