well i'm gonna fight it because it was a sunday night and no construction was going on. when i did construction we had to cover the signs when there was no construction going on. as for Gary i feel really bad because i kinda pissed off an old man who happened to be an ex cop or something because i flew into the parking lot. pretty sure he called the boys in blue and they were just waiting for someone to do something so when Gary did a burnout, they were right there to catch him.

Oh man... Cops sitting around, insurance surcharges, innactive construction zones... I'll restrain myself from ranting. So... Difficult...

Yeah I think if you go in saying "I have no problem paying a regular speeding ticket but am hoping it can be changed to not be in a construction zone considering that no work was being done on a Sunday" it just might work.

It's impossible, as of 2 weeks ago, to get the points removed without going to trial. You used to be able to go the prosecutor beforehand and just plea down the points or something like that, but they've completely stopped that practice.

Really? Have you been down since? Do they still have the judge that you can just go talk to in that side room, or does it all have to go through one of the main courtroom's now? Can you even bargain down the fine in the same way you used to be able to (knowing that you're stuck with the points regardless)?

Dam... I knew when the news ran a story about how the courts 'encouraged people to come down' and how usually everyone got a reduction, that the increased public awareness could cause issues.

98 in a 50? Oh dear. I was thinking 30 over. 48 over in a construction zone is gonna be tough. You better come off with just the right attitude or I think you're toast. Be sure to stress that you are fine with paying the fine as it sits, but just without the construction zone designation.

EDIT: [Rant mode on]
Can't resist. What really pisses me off is how the insurance companies use the points as an excuse to raise rates to unfair levels, on a service that is legislated to be mandatory. Accidents (as the most clearly established link to claim risk) should be the primary mechanism for rate-setting and they aren't; meanwhile insurance companies continue to generate enourmous profits on the backs of the driving community who has no choice and no power in the matter. I feel strongly that we need a regulated not-for-profit insurance industry in Alberta. Free-market only works when market forces can actually taek effect, and since insurance is mandatory that can't happen.[rant off]

I just hated the fact that the cop came over after he dealt with gary and started beakin off and swearing to us.

Im usually a **** stirrer in those situation, especially since I didnt drive there. But since I was with club members, I bit my tounge out of respect for everyone else.

That and the old man peeling out in his T-bird after the bastards in blue left really didnt help.

Anyone remember when it was $6500 a year to drive your $300 **** box to school and back? I sure as hell do. I'd really like to know how they figure out rates.

"How much did you pay?"

"$300"

"Times that by 20 and thats your rate a year"

I drove without insurance for over a year and got away with it. Even when I was caught, I got off almost 100% on the ticket. I ended up paying like $75 or something.

Now I pay $3500 full coverage on my miata a year with 1 ticket (free thank god). They were gonna raise my rate $900 a year if I got 1 more ticket, regardless of what it was.

Hell, they make more money than the government. You think the government would be all over that industry.

Someone does a burnout in a parking lot located in a large public park, gets caught by the cops.. they feel that they don't deserve what they got and wants to get away with it..

Someone else bitches about the cops and calls them names.. even seems to feel proud about driving around without insurance even though they were caught..

where is the accountability people? Yes, I speed, yes I have done things that I deserve tickets for.. however, if I got caught, accept that it was my fault and whatever punishment was handed to me was deserved.. why is it, some people feel that they should be any diffrent?

sheesh.. and people wonder why some of us don't attend these meets..

way to go guys...

I never said I was proud. I got what I deserved back then. Theres more to my story than I care to share. But a cop walking over to a bunch of guys standing around and basically saying, "anyone else want a ticket? 'Insert swears here'". Makes be feel real warm and fuzzy about the people entrusted with our protection.

I think Gary got what he deserved. Pretty much all of us agreed that it wasnt the smartest thing to do.

Greg's ticket was a joke.

And so was the meet. 3-5 cars as usual. Real dedication in this club. I dont even have a car and I make an effort to come out for support.

Normally I wouldn't post here but I thought it would be nice to make an announcement and a recommendation:

The Porsche Club Autocross is tomorrow night at Race City Speedway. Set up at 5:00 and runs until dark. You want a safe place to do a burn out and push your car to the limit here it is. We expect a good turn out this time - possibly even a couple of Ferraris and supercharged Trans Ams coming out.

As for Greg - talk to POINTTS as they were really good at reducing the sentence of a customer of mine. His wife got a following too close and speeding ticket that came out to 7 demerits and a fine. After he hired points the following too close was dropped and the points on the speeding ticket were dropped so that all she had was a reduced fine. When it was all said and done they figured that the the cost of hiring POINTTS and paying the reduce fine was about the same as just paying both fines with the big difference being that she got no demerits against her licence and her insurance would not be affected. If you need a contact number let me know.

there are good cops and bad cops. as soon as i find out i'm dealing with a bad cop i have my lawyer on the phone, usually they leave me alone, the real **** heads just load me up with tickets. when u take all 6 tickets to the crown prosecuter, they'll toss them all in the garbage.

as for gary i'd just explain the situation to the prosecuter, just mention that being the on of the leaders of the calgary rx7 club, u do organize meets AT race city but for those people who dont race we also have meets in public areas and when the general public + a group of imports owners + officers = a weekend meet blown way outta proportion. don't accept blame and don't deny it, just giev ur story and the prosecuter will sympathise usually.

Chris, I don't question the guilt and taking ownership and the stupidity of it as well. I should know better, but you get caught up in the moment and wanna show off. I just hope to be able to negoatiate so my insurance doesn't get slaughtered since i do have a perfect clean record as it is. I didn't stand there and roll smoe off the tires with a full burnout, I just rev'd her up and laid a patch at the end of the lot where nobody was around, still bad though......

Andrew, I don't consider the cop to be in the wrong or a bad cop, he just did his job and then got carried away with a little power after the fact. If i were in his shoes I would've some something similar I'm sure. The reason to fight is demerits and the price tag, I'd gladly pay the fine if they'd waive the demerits.

Yeah, its not like your bank account has a bottom.

Which reminds me.

If you buy that thing for me we talked about earlier, I'll pay you back. You can hang onto it if you want. I just dont want to let another one slide by.

im gonna call points solo. thanks. i'm gonna try to get the whole thing erased because even if they knock the points off, the ticket will still show on my abstract and i dont want my insurance company seeing that.

actually only violations where demerits were deducted show up on ur abstract.
i was in north glenomre park after 11, slide through a red light (first snow) and got hit by the camera, even 1 speeding ticket i've all had reduced to a "moving violation" no demerits and 118$ fine. and none of them are on my abstract

Syritis is correct. If the points are waived then your insurance company will NOT see it. (kinda the point)

I deleted like three different rants... Suffice to say that I feel bad for Gary and wish we had a whole better traffic system in place.

Only request I have for those attending is that they behave like adults who take seriously the safety of others. That means no burn outs or donuts in the parking area, no drag racing or speeding down the drag strip to where the cars are parked. Follow the instructions of the people in charge of the autocross. You have to sign two waivers - the first one at the entrance to the track (Race City) and another at the black pickup that is set up as a base station (Porsche Club). The cost is free to spectate and $40 to run.

P.S. Also, no touching cars that don't belong to you, etc.
