Question Buying a timing light

I'll be buying a timing light soon. From what I understand the inductive lights sometimes have a problem picking up a good signal and it's better to go to a DC type light.

I've searched around a little without any luck finding a DC type.

Does anyone have any ideas?

the DC type lights in my experience don't work worth a **** on rx7's!

seems to work fine on my talon though.

The only time I've had a problem with an inductive light was with really thick spark plug wires (accell 10mm ones). So we took an old plug wire and used it for timing, then replaced it with the accell one again.

Sometimes it's just so difficult to get a straight answer!

I was working off this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/how-set-timing-503747/

In the end though, it seems to be a moot point since you can't get a DC type light around here anyways...

I'll second the "buy the cheapest light you can find"...

I didn't have to mess with my timing when I installed the 2gdfis, btw - but I never did the transistor trick.

I don't have a problem spending the $50 at Crap Tire, but if their inductive light doesn't work then I'm back at square one, less $50!

So I was hoping to get the DC since I thought it would work all the time, until you said otherwise.

The TT circuit subtracts about 10 degrees from what I understand.

If I was more familiar with the engine I'd set it by trial an error like I use to do with the Chevette...

That's the way I'm leaning. If it doesn't work, I'll take it back and start my search again.

How much cheaper than $50 can they get anyways?

I think the one i got was 20 odd dollars but that was back in the days of woolworths
25 years ago and it still works good. think i got my moneys worth out of it now.
I have a snapon one to but like the old 20 dollar one better for the rotarys.

So the DC type is better than the inductive type for you?

Whenever I've needed a timing light, I've just gone to AutoValue and borrowed one. They have a free loaner program there.

If the 50$ unit from Canadian tire or Partsource doesn't work, return it.

They've got a very reasonable return program, and so long as your *not* using it to perform work then returning it, I'd feel totally justified in returning a product that doesn't perform.

Funny, I checked the Princess Auto catalogue and I didn't find any.

At $45 dollars + shipping to Windsor I might as well pay $50 at Canadian Tire.

I bought the Inductive timing light from Canadian Tire for $60. Innova Equus #3551 Never had a problem with It.

Well I've searched and found 'light' and found 'timing' but no 'timing light'

Man, you live real close the gates of heaven!

That's pretty much where I'll be heading as soon as the TT kit comes in. They don't have a $60 one anymore, it's $50 now. Woohoo, good for me.

I'm not too far from Boss Tools. I looked them up online and found nothing.

My quicky search was at:

Canadian Tire / Parts Source
Princess Auto
Boss Tools

Since I've heard nothing bad about Inductive Lights and rotaries from you guys I'm just going to forget about the DC light and go to Canadian Tire for their $50 light. We're not talking about a lot of money nor a major problem if it doesn't work.

Thanks for all the help.
