Cool Auto Tint

Wanted to start a thread on expierences with auto tint. Looking to tint my 7 in the spring but would like to hear your feed back on your car, any car. Dont care if its your mini van or your 7, throw it up.

What was the brand they used, warrenty and price you paid. The name of the shop would be great too. I plan on having my 7 around for years to come so i want to make sure i get no low end stuff....IE turning purple on me!

Also what shade % did you go with? I dont want to go to dark, kinda like the silloette look so im thinking 20% in the back and 35% on the sides.

lets hear it.........

I had mine done at Shadow Tint located at:

3921 Manchester Road SE (just east of chinook centre)
287-TINT is their number

They did agood job and they only had the car for two hours. Many of the RX8 owners in Calgary get the tint doen there. I had the good stuff (non-fade) put on. They quoated me $185 for the back three windos but they took off $30 after I mentioned that they were getting press on the RX8 club.

I had the 20% tint done. 5% is too dark....35% just wasn't enough.

Mazdabation,

A number of RX-7's, along with my bro's mazda3, went to a shop near bayview and hwy 7... they do detailing along with tint.
They did the RX-7's for $115 and $120 for my bro's (more windows...)

PM if you're interested...

Can't thank you enough for the link you posted on the LED's... I'll be placing my order soon enough with those guys...

Any place i called around here that was in the mid $100 was using the cheap stuff that they said will fade. All the higher grades were mid $200 around here and have a life time guarantee.

Any actuall brands of tint better then otheres? this may help in the selection of shop i choose........3M, Solar gaurd, Lumar etc.

Neo before you order let me know as i need a crap load too. we can ship them all at once...

I had my 7 done years ago - cost 150 at the time. I presume it was a better quality film, as there's no sign of fading or turning purple after 8 years. It might seem high, but I've done enough tinting on my own to know that it was worth it to have the pros do that big, compound curved hatch glass just by itself, the fact the 2 fronts got done was just a bonus.
I typically go for a 30-35% tint on the front windows, and 20% on the back(s). The 30% is dark enough that it cuts down on the heat load and glare, but not so dark you can't apex a sharp curb properly in the dark, and more importantly, doesn't seem to attract any notice from the police, especially when noticably darker tint like the 20% is on the backs.

More recently, I had ShadowTint here in Calgary do my Passat wagon - they used the good, lifetime warranteed SolarGard film - 7 windows, quite reasonable price, which I won't mention here, as I got a bit of a break both for my association with the Calgary Sports Car Club, and more just because I know the owners from 3 seasons of autocrossing and we did it as a cash deal. Even so, the regular, undiscounted rate with the good film would have been 300+tax I think, not bad for that many windows. You could get cheaper, but it would likely be with lower quality film and workmanship. The better places will actually remove any glass they can to apply the film.

I've been tinting windows on the side for about 8yrs now and I use Sun Guard's top of the line tint. It has metal in it so it won't fade. Whatever you do, don't get any tint that has any red tinge to it(purply colour) because uv rays break down red pigment the fastest. 90% of my customers go with 20% all around and not one has had a problem with the cops.

FYI: For you guys using GPS systems through windows - Make sure you get the tint without the metal in it as it messes up the reception.

I've had every car I've owned since 1985 tinted at various places. Never paid under $200 cash. Always 20% on the rear and 35% on the front, with a 4" band of 5% - 20% across the top of the front windows. The price usually changes the most depending on the difficulty of the rear window/hatch. I had one car that cost $250 for the back window alone, and took over 4 hrs to do. One thing to make very sure of - if they screw up your defroster by cutting a wire, you need a new rear window. That's exactly what happened to the $250 rear window. The back glass was $2800 full list price.

In the old days there used to be a number of options - polarized, scratch proof, and seamless. Seemless meant that any window was done with a single piece of tint regardless of the curvature. If the place can show a job they've done on a very curved window in one piece, I would say they are a skilled enough place to go to.

Yeah, I don't know where some of you were getting your windows done but I've never done a car with a difficult back window for less than $180 cash and I was doing it with little to no overhead. My first gen back in 93 cost me $185+tx and it's an easier car. That's why I got into the tinting in the first place. The price of tint has almost doubled over the last 10 yrs. People just aren't making the money they used to on the labour. If you want a good job done and quality materials(tint) you can expect to pay between $180 and $220. Don't get me wrong, you may get lucky, just be careful who you deal with. Most places only guarantee that the windows will have 10% or less of the surface area flawed. Show quality tint can cost a considerable amount more.
