The benefits being that the FC transmissions have a higher 5th gear ratio - yielding a higher top speed (if you're into that), lower RPM's when going faster, and they are stronger overall. At least that's what I've heard, and I'd love to do the swap just for those reasons.

FunK73's S4 N/A Trans Swap - is FunK73's post of swapping an S4 N/A into his FB. I think I'll do something similar in mine. I'd love to do a TII trans but that would be a bit more spendy than an N/A trans around here.

Nice build. Did you ever decide what to do with the gauges? I'm thinking about getting some, but I don't even know if I need them, or what ones to get haha.
Also, you should share that CF hook-up :P I need some stuff make up. Thinking 1 face plate for part of the radio deck, and then a pocket for the other.

And don't mount it where I did, dangerous to look that far down. My next ones will be above the vents in the center or above the gauge cluster mounted to the dash.
That carbon fiber hook up is me I'll be learning how to mold and form it here in a month or two for that car I'm working on and will start to talk to our supplier about the deals ($50/sq ft I believe) he can give me. Should be cool though

As far as the build, I'll be sharing my list that I think will complete the car by next spring, on a budget, for a weekend auto-x and fun car that won't see many miles

Welcome to the forum! So that was your 11th post... seems like just enough to be able to post in this section. If so, that makes me feel awesome having your first post in the First Gen section be on my build - I'll take that
These cars are awesome, no doubt about that. Addictive as all hell though, I have two cars now and am looking at selling one of them and getting a nicer car for a few years to come, mostly for winter and to put many miles on. You can guess which one I'm not going to consider selling... haha
I'll be posting some pics up this week hopefully of the 7 washed, waxed, and winter prepped to share my process in getting her ready for a 6 month storage. Not sure where I'll be keeping her, but I'll have parts at home that I want to work on so I can get her all ready for her spring debut in May

Haha 2 year old yellow Lab. Been an awesome hunting dog. Actually, if you look at the first pics I have up on the first page he's on those too
I'll be taking out the entire engine, wiring harness, trans, stereo system, and whatever else I feel like soon. Will be a rebuild
It's actually being listed up as a part out in the first gen parts for sale section, but hasn't been approved by a moderator yet.

Nope, neither.
Rebuild thoughts are as follows:
I. I've never seen the inside of a rotary engine and really want to understand how it works. After researching for hundreds of hours over the last year I desperately want to understand why my 7 goes down the road with no pistons.
II. I'd like to build it into a weekend race motor. A port job on both the intake and exhaust ports, to give her that extra oomph to win an auto-x and take her down the drag strip.
III. I'm studying Mechanical Engineering at the U of M and have always had the gear head, mechanical, structural mind that loves to see how things work and be able to explain it to others.
IV. My 7 now has 86,001 mi on the original motor, as far as I know, and is running just fine. But I want to have a spare in case she decides to let a seal go. It's mostly just a piece of mind factor, so I know I have a fully working engine no matter if I keep the one in the car now and just have a spare race motor for later. If I swap em out I can see if I built the race motor correctly and leave it in, with a fully working stock motor out just in case something goes wrong with the racer.
V. I'm always on the hunt for more motors, and cheap ones especially. If I can pick up another 12a for cheap I'd like to have 2 spares, mostly just to play with and study.
Crazy, yes. Insane, probably. I'm just very curious and want a winter project that will last me all year. Plus, it would be something to look forward to when I get her back on the road next May.

Well, just ordered this steering wheel adapter from eBay
to hopefully swap to a Grant Challenger Series steering wheel
next spring, just for a change.
Also ordered Forza 4 Limited Collector's Edition so I'll have an 85 SE soon on the game

My car has the same adaptor kit for my grant gt wheel. Part of the horn scratches that gold plate and makes this god awful noise that drove me nuts.
I ended up moving the horn to a button on the dash and putting cloth between the thing that scratches and the plate. Hopefully yours won't do that but if you end up wanting to move it - or add another horn button, the original is still in tact and I didn't do any wire splicing at all - let me know.
If this was a little confusing its cause I sent it from my phone, sorry xD

Got my first 1st gen at 15. Drove it through high school, college, and at 35 married with 2 awesome kids I own 2 1gs now. Awesome to see young guys still into working on 7's. Nice thread and keep at it!

Will be getting the wheel after Christmas hopefully.
New plan is:
1. Exhaust needs to be done. Will do 2 1/2" thick walled stainless with two Magnaflows behind a Racing Beat header.
2. Sound system. Already have Kenwood head, with new 100W 4 1/2" fronts and 160W 6 1/2" rears that are Kenwood also. Would like to
a. 400W 4ch Kenwood amplifier for the stock 4
b. 2 10" Kenwood subs
c. ~1000W amp for the subs
And maybe some other small mods.

Thanks! I love both learning from more experienced rotary owners and hearing from younger owners like myself. Keeps the dreams alive, and shows me that I will still be in love with them as the years come.

Well, still working on putting her away for winter. I just remembered that I shot some pics of the cars a week ago and thought I'd post em up for the most current shape of my 7's.
The blue one is getting along in my part out, already made back the money I spent buying it - so that makes me happy
Trying to make some tough decisions on projects that can wait and others that can get done in a timely manner and it all comes down to the money.
Only have about 3 more weeks until school is over for the semester - pretty stoked for that since it will give me some time off to work on the Formula SAE car here at the U of M and it will also give me some money to try and get some other parts to get the 84 GS where it needs to be for next spring

parts car with black interior! hell yeah, the parts car even has the cool four spoke 80s looking steering wheel in it and the nice basic door cards. Good pick up dude. One thing you should consider while your doing little things is removing the trim that surrounds the windshield and clean it, then paint it fresh coat of black. I keep looking at mine and wanting to do that but winter sucks here for painting anything

I completely agree with that trim around the windshield! I've been looking into doing it since last winter and will hopefully have the guts to take it off and redo it this winter. It's just nerve racking thinking about popping clips that hold it in to take it off, then sanding, priming, and painting. Would like to do all the way around the windshield, then the door trim as well - to get it all back to black
