SpAm's FD3s buildup

Hi guys,
my name is Patrick, I’m 26years old and live in Austria. This is the build thread of my ever time dream car I’ve owned several FC’s and an FB before but was never able to (truly) afford a FD3s. Now, after finishing my studies and getting my degree in automotive engineering, it was time for me to fulfill my dream! And here it is:

The base is a 1991 R1 in black, imported from Japan. Car has 68.000km’s on the clock and was stock except for a turbotimer and 3” catback. I’ve bought the car from a company in Germany, they thought it had busted water seals. Bought the car for ~3500USD, put it on the trailer, drove home, pressure checked the cooling system, put a new pressure cap on… voila…

A stock FD3S working flawless for ~3500USD without rust, strong compression numbers and in good/drivable condition I think it was the steal of my live.

I drove the car only for ~200kms to check if everything is working fine and put it into my workshop for storage. This was last year’s October. As I know that the FD is a ticking time bomb in stock/unmaintained condition, I’ve took my time to earn some money and gathering parts all around the world.

Special thanks to all the guys here on rx7club who hooked me up with their parts. It’s (nearly) impossible to get good stuff here in Europe.
The car will mainly be used as a track toy but will also see the streets sometimes, but the main focus is road racing/drifting.

I will use this build thread for updates on my progress and hopefully to get answer on questions which occur during my buildup! Every constructive input is VERY WELCOME from you guys! I don’t want to make pics of every part I’ve bought for the car and every bolt I’m fastening on the car. I know, we are all picture ******, but really… Everyone of us has seen enough pictures of installed pulleys or a installed fuel line, c-clip, bolt,…

Let’s start with the spec list. All parts on the list are here for 95%.
Engine:

stripped down to the block, all new mazda OEM gaskets, major maintenance!!!

suspension:

BanzaiRacing tranny brace

exterior:

mazdaspeed gtc style front
feed style sideskirts

wheels:
Rays Gramlights 57d in 17x9" ET+28 illuminous PINK 8)

Brakes:
mysterious high quality automotive ****, to be uncovered in a few days
AtomicRex pedal box
flyoff handbrake (not sure how to fit yet)

I’m sure I’ve forgot the one or the other thing, but I think it gives a rough overview of my upgrading path. Any input/questions welcome.

Let’s start with what all are waiting for… PICS PICS PICS!
I don’t have pictures from the car before pulling the engine, bumper, gearbox etc. But I think everyone has seen enough stock FD’s here on the forum

Here it is on my lift, already removed the engine + gearbox, gramlights mounted

Kakimoto catback installed + overview of my workshop...

another view of my shop

TEIN monoflex mounted an set to the lowest possible position... looks legit to low for the street and for the track, but it gives me very much motivation... no more truck ride height with the engine out

disassembled turbos because of this oily front housing and to port the wastegate...
i think the front turbo looks really like a shot oil seal on the exhaust side.
the overall oily condition of the chra looks like leaking oil flanges.
Please note: I've not used any stuff like wd40 to disassemble the turbos, so this seems to be engine oil on the exhaust wheel.
what do you guys think?

I like the waste gate port.

are you going to stay with sequential on the turbos?

I'm staying full sequential.

"stage1" is stock turbos with m2 stage3 ecu, AzEKnight's solenoid rack and haltech ps2000+iq3 fpr monitoring and education purposes

"stage2" (next year) is AzEKnight's solenoid rack + haltechps2000 + iq3 + BNR stage3 twins

I love the sequential system itself, it was so much ahead of it's time. Of course its a PITA to fix if something broke down, but I have no intention to go single on the 13b REW in the FD.
I know all the downsides of the twins (especially the heavy a** heat soaked steel manifold on the aluminum housings), but the instant response of turned up twins is just to addicting

I've also owned an fc3's I've bought for 400usd... driven it for 2 years daily and countless times on the track... was my daily/drift/winterbitch...
runned like a boss until a good friend of mine crashed it into oncoming traffic... R.I.P.

I always have luck buying car's, my buddies told me more than once that I should become an used-car dealer

That's the reason for not getting married just joking

Taxes here in Austria are CRAZY high...
If I want to register the FD, I will have to pay, please sit down ladies and gentleman, about 23.000USD!
So it will NEVER be registerd in Austria

What do you mean with "Obama family diaspora live"? Don't get it, sorry

looking good so far.

all the numbers that are getting thrown around are crazy high and crazy low like 3500 for a running FD and 28000 to register it.

the bbk looks great. is there a reason many of the companies are going with the J slots in the rotors instead of the usual slotted or drilled rotors? just wondering. i love the look of the kit.

The "J" is a propriety AP Racing slot design. But you are right, alot of performance brake manufactures are doing their slots very similar. Alcon uses a "C", Endless use a "E", etc. The J, C, and E are all somewhat similar. I can say that the AP J provides greater initial bite characteristics over the traditional straight slit.

Welcome to Europe/Austria!
I'm living in one of the most car hating countrys in Europe... Over here, you are a bad guy who wnat's to burn the world if you're driving a modified car

The 28000 is a penalty payment. Here, you pay for every gramm CO2 emissions of a new car. As my FD was never registered in Austria, it's a "new" car for the government. As there are no official CO2 emission's for the fd3s, the govenrment takes a crazy formula and calculates the CO2 emission's/fuel consumption equivalent via the bhp!

gasoline vehicles: (Power in kW/10) + 3 = fuel consumption / 100km
diesel vehicles: (Power in kW /10) + 2 = fuel consumption / 100km

this fuel consumption will be recalculated to the CO2 emissions

160g CO2 are "free", so you don't have to pay taxes.
from 160g - 180g CO2/km you pay 25€ per g
from 180g - 220g CO2/km you pay 50€ per g
over that, you pay 75€ per g

so, lets do the math

252hp = 185KW / 10 + 3 = 21,5 * 25 = 573,5 g / km - 160g = 377,5g
20g *25 = 500€
40g *50= 2000€
317,5g*75=23812,5€
----------------------
= 26312,5€ CO2 Malus
this equals roughly 32453USD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (the 28000 I've mentioned was an estimation, as you can see it's even higher)

And that's ONLY for the CO2 emissions!
You also pay 20% taxes of the vehicles buying price.
And after that, you pay again 16% taxes of the vehicles buying price. Thats called the NOVA (=Normverbrauchsabgabe). It's a tax related on a cars fuel consumtion. Get the point? Yes, it's basically the same like the CO2 punishment, but our government is smart and has two taxes for the FU**ING same thing!...
So it will roughly cost 40.000USD to get the car legaly registered over here.

Donations will gladly be taken via Paypal!

so guys, I'm back again.

I've had holidays for one week which I've spent in Germany at my girlfriends home together with her sister and parents.
After I came back, my Dad had an accident and I've had to organize/do many things and support my Mum.
But everything is good again, Dad is well and already home again Therefore I've had no time to update this thread Next posts are about the progress of the last weeks.

started with mounting and modifiing the atomicrex pedalbox.
I've didn't like the tiny reinforcement plates for the firewall, so I've decided to do my own plate.

made a template

took some stainless steel I've had laying around and started to cut it up

finished plate bolted up to the pedal box

In the car

made another plate to block off the AC-holes and for additional bulkheads (clutch line, left front brake caliper, line to the rear brakes)

pulled her out, chilling in the sun
started washing and wet sanding the engine bay

Bay finished sanding, the rest will be done by my body guy

@islander

thanks

@migrod1

no real timeline.
I'm currently moving together with my girlfriend into my house, therefore I have not too much time for the FD currently.
But I've done a ton of powdercoating, will post pics these days

I'm also preparing my winter beater (BMW E36 325i with more steeringlooooooock) for some dorifto fun... we have nice snowy roads over here in a few weeks and therefore it's time to destroy some sh*t
