hopefully your son is helping you turn wrenches. i would have loved to work on my FD with my dad in as garage like that. the car is looking great!

jacobcartmill 07-20-13 02:10 PM

great project.

question: i'm curious about the fender vents you were working on. what exactly did you do, and why?

Dr.Speed 07-20-13 03:52 PM

wow that is awesome...I can do just about anything mechanical, but paint I've never had the nerve (nor patience) to tackle.

As to the first part of your question, What you see is what you get, I glued the vents into place and then filled the area in around them to remove the seam. It's was done purely for esthetics, as far I I am aware there is no addtional added benefit to doing this. It's a subtle difference. I considered a set of Feed knock off fenders from Shine auto but from what I have seen around the forum lately they have been beat to death. I'm not knocking the guys who have them. I think they look awesome but I am interested in creating my own look to an extent. While I would be surprised if I were the first person to have done this I don't recall ever seeing it.

Nice find Dave. Glad to see you are back into an Fd.

Tell me about it, This kid has been in rx7's since the day I met him. I was on my second Fd in 1999 when I met his mother. We were married the week before Rotorfest 2003. I even cut my honeymoon short one day to get back in time to drive up to Rotorfest. My wife & I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary earlier this month.

Hey bud! Nice to hear from you. How you been?

Fd3BOOST 07-20-13 09:33 PM

So after the car was prepped, the worst of the dents filled and sanded down through 240/400 grit it's ready to be primed. I put on 4 good coats here...

The fenders look good so far. They do need some more acrylic fill and block sanding before i get ready to seal them.

This is going to look great, love the color. Im not a fan of molding most things but those fender vents are going to look awesome.

Dliverance 07-21-13 01:36 AM

Couldn't help but notice the rolled front fenders. Was that done before or by you in anticipation of wide wheels?

Natey 07-21-13 01:39 AM

The fenders look sick. I can't wait to see it buttoned up and painted!

Haha, I have a few pretty classic ones too of my daughter, too. Some people were born into it...

Good eye,
I did that as well to make sure I didn't snag them with the wheels. I did the same in the rear.

GoodfellaFD3S 07-25-13 04:41 PM

The car is coming along great Dave..... I like some of the subtle tweaks you're making :icon_tup:

Maybe I missed it, but please tell me you're removing the rear wiper

Thanks for the supportive words Rich! I do intend to remove the wiper arm. I have to go out and get the aluminum attachment for my welder. I have a Hobart hander 190, so no sweet TIG set up to stick weld aluminum with. They make a winding gun attachment for aluminum wire though.

Work has been crazy busy for me though so I have not been able to update my progress yet.

ZE Power MX6 07-28-13 02:32 AM

That fender look really good, I like that blue on your old FD.

Dvst8 07-28-13 11:48 PM

nice build!

RiceFx306 07-28-13 11:54 PM

Love it. My car is about the same mileage but it's been 6 years and countless dollar trying to restore it to former glory. Wish I had the guts to try some more stuff myself.

Copeland 07-29-13 09:57 AM

Looks great, keep it up!

Fd3BOOST 08-04-13 09:40 PM

Well for better of for worse I have been absolutely swamped with work these past three weeks. This has prevented me from making any real progress with the car. I marked today (Sunday) off to get time in on the car. I have worked the past three Saturday's and Sunday's combined so this we necessary.

So the most notable thing for this post is the brand new PFSupercars bumper. I called Ray and he had a new bumper made just for me.... I feel special Raymond. I ixnayd on the stock bumper and was happy to get the new jonta!
