You used more base than clear?! That seems backwards. How many coats of clear did you use and what was the mixing ratio?

Lol,
It's not backwards. It takes as much paint as it takes. I used a white sealer and blue base coat. You know how many coats of blue you have to shoot to hide the white? Let's just say more than one.

I laid out three coats of clear. As far as mixing ratio, I went off the can, I recommend you do the same if that's why your asking.

Hahaha, I have been in the auto body industry long enough that I know what it takes to do a correct paint job. The mixing ratio matters because if you used a 2:1:1 clear over a 4:1:1 clear you would obviously need more clear. You should have tinted your sealer to get a better coverage with less coats saving money on base. And blue typically covers quite well but again that depends on the line of paint you are using and if you went with water borne base or just solvent.

Fd3BOOST 01-16-15 04:18 PM

That's awesome,
But my paint job is already done and I don't have to pay my bills painting cars.

Correct me if I am wrong but your a manager and don't actually paint yourself no?

If you are that interested in the paint job go back and read, I really don't feel like bringing you up to speed and debating shit that took place the summer before last.

Appreciate your insight but again, the paint is done and has been done for quite some time.

Cheers

So back to your build. How are things coming! Lol

LoL,
Slowly but I plan on putting the long block back together completely this weekend.
I have a nice low milage (28k) engine harness to use. Just a matter of sitting down and getting it done.

TorkFD 01-19-15 08:00 PM

subbed, I don't think I've ever sat and read 19 pages of thread until now. Great job brother keep it up

Fd3BOOST 01-20-15 09:23 PM

^ Glad you enjoyed the read. I have builds that i love to check in on myself.

I was hoping to have this engine ready to drop back in the car by this week but I was missing pest items like the studs and nuts for the UIM and the TB. Also lost some other bits, the air pump bracket and bolts, small nuts for the pipe and the coil rack. Can't find the bolts for the engine to trans either.. :(

I thought I did a good job of baging and labeling all the hardware but after having to move etc some of the stuff was just misplaced.

I have the small parts to gather this week and I need some coolant hose and the belts. I am on the down slope to getting the engine back in the car.

Yup, it's the thermostat. Came with the sake bomb oil cooler kit.

Wow really is an awesome thread. Can't wait to see it done.

That color is stunning! Is this a tricoat? It has some much depth for a two stage color. Care to share the paint code? This makes me want to color change my FD too!

It's House of Kolor "Majik Blue", PB37 I think is the code. It's The Shimrin base coat line.
I was tempted to spray a Cobalt Kandy over it too but as you already know I'm not a professional car painter and I didn't want to push my luck trying Kandy.

I really wasn't able to do much this weekend since my parts haven't came in the mail from Ray Crowe yet. Today I cleaned up the ABS. Painted the bracket and heat shield and put it back in the car. Not very exciting but that's all I have for today.

Man, I don't know where you guys find the time. I'd love to do one of these "from a bare chassis" builds, but I have enough trouble just keeping mine clean for street use and prepped for track use, and slipping some new mods here and there.

Looks great Dave!

jacobcartmill 01-26-15 09:59 AM

peter, he just got divorced. he's got plenty of time!

dave i love doing "little" stuff like that ABS/bracket cleanup. it's almost therapeutic for me. and our engine bay is looking awesome btw.

Yea I have plenty of time now. I do run a small business so I work a lot but I have all the free time to myself when I quit working at the end of a day. Thanks Jacob. I used it as therapy yesterday. It took me nearly two days getting all the vacuum lines right. Amazing how flipping complicated the sequential twins are.

So, how did the seats turn out? Did they finally "relax" or did Austin have to rework them?

The seats never really looked any different than the day I picked them up. I never bothered Austin with them. I don't know what they could do for me other than to sew up new covers which would be more suede etc... I wasn't really happy with the way they turned out but I'm not going make them re-do them. That would be kind of fucked up in my part since they are not all that bad. You always take a risk getting custom work done and I just came up short on that one. It's not that big of a deal though. They look okay I guess.

That color is awesome man. Always love seeing paint projects turn out flawless. Paint looks great

I am creeping closer and closer to dropping the engine back in the car.

Cleaned up the AC compressor and painted it. Then i mounted in back on the engine but I am short one bolt, go figure...

Cleaned up the lines and wrapped them with some gold tape, I heard it will make mad horsepower gains yo.. Majestic horse power increases aside I may insulate these more, I would love frigid AC.
