Regarding wheels. Here is a pic of HRE calls their mono forged wheel.

As you can see it starts off as a general shaped forged block and no specific designed die pressed forged block like how RAYS, BBS, or now Advans do with dies.

So Phil, I'm by no means a wheel expert, so please be patient with my ignorance. Are you saying that swapping out barrels on my 3 piece Work Meisters would require me to send them to an "authorized" dealer or maintainer to have them swapped out? I've seen various "S1 Work Meister Barrels" for sale on sites like Ebay. If I were wanting to change them out with my current wheels, and could locate larger barrels with the correct offset, could I not just order them and change them out myself? I'm trying to understand what's so complicated about changing out barrels if you can find what you're looking for???

Thx

^ The problem is that you do not know the source of those ebay barrels. They could be POS china garbage that will not balance properly.

Any person with basic skills can swap barrels and do it properly. Companies IMO make it difficult to get done, to make it seem like it is a harder job than it actually is. I think companies want you to send the wheels to them to help control the amount of "fakes" there are. It is to protect their brand name.

I do not know if work will just sell you a barrel, they may have a different policy regarding that.

Personally, IMO saying 3 piece wheels are no good and cast wheels are no good is a bit ridiculous, just because a wheel is cast does not make it garbage.

Yeah. It's not complicated to change out the barrels. But what I've noticed from another multi piece wheel I recently help swap centers, the holes on the centers were bigger and gave some play. That's when I realized what if its not centered perfectly.

WOrk wheels don't care if you do it or not. But who knows what they would do after I say this. Forgeline however will not sell you barrels unless they assemble your wheels. This is liability purpose and I could understand that as a company. They also want to make sure trained personnel did the work. Which again going back to my friends three piece where the centers are swapped and different torque on the bolts. Yikes!! Another problem is you just can't tell if these small shops do any testing on their design and just o make them pretty. I don't want to be the test dummy.

Don't put words in my mouth.. as I have no intention to do that to you. I have not said garbage. I'm saying many misunderstand what they are getting. Example. Some think that just because you've paid $2000/wheel on a 3 piece wheel, they think its light and made better than BBS/Rays forged wheels. Or because either the company states its forged, its mold forged (some used the term forged, but only thing its done to it is barrel flow formed). That's when some myth about how some wheels are made different than others come into play. I also understand a lot of wheel adverts are misleading too. Using "Forged" in their company name or same company owner starting multiple wheel companys selling same wheels that are compose of chinese knock off wheels or made with less quality controlled parts. I have no issue with people buying what ever they wish.. as its not my money. But understand what you are getting is what I'm trying to make point of.
I certainly didn't know before and I'm wising up as I go. Buying $4000 set of wheels because I understand how they are made and quality put in vs. Spending $6000 on wheels thinking they are well made but in reality its more for looks, well, that's what I want people to understand and realize. If you know you are paying for just the look, than I can't say much. That's really the bottomline.

And to make you happy and to make sure no misunderstanding... I'll say this, I also realize CAST wheel designed correctly could be stronger than forged. But, Cast knock off of Forged isn't. Rota and others started to add material around weak points of their forged copy so they would stand more abuse. Would I call it garbage? Probably not. Would I buy it thinking its better than the real thing? Probably not. Do I respect other big wheel companies that put R&D into their products but cast wheels? Yes. Would I buy it, Yes. I actually own couple of sets. I have factory cast wheels on my daily. If I call those garbage, I'm an walking contradiction.

Again, I'm just providing info based on what I know. Its like anything you make or anyone makes.. Compared side to side, one might be able to put a grade on it. Unless its truly ****, all does what it does. But we can all put a grade on it to see which is better.

Just reading this now I know why my wheels from VR Wheels that I bought and got rid of, because they would never balance well, so I sold them.

I could see that.. especially since they sell generic barrels and if the center is not aligned correctly, it would be very hard to balance.

Also, here is a video from Rays Engineering.

Rays Engineering Racing Wheels - YouTube

I think this video shows what Rays Engineering do during production and what some companies DO NOT do. Also, during my research and looking through many many ads, many companies state they do heat treatment and such but they do not have such facility to do them... or they consider heat treatment prior to cutting as form of treatment and some experts I've talked to state to me that treatment should be done after all the processes (since many don't have die mold forging, at least after flow form).

Here is a video of how most other mono forged wheels are made as I stated before..

Forged Alloy Wheel Manufacturing by Rimstock Plc - YouTube

A big forged block that gets 70-80% cut out.

Found the HRE...

How HRE Forged Wheels Are Made - The Octane Report - YouTube

Found this BC Wheel video..

BC Forged Wheels - Manufacturing Process - YouTube

If they are cheap.. I would pick them over some of the USA mom and pop 3piece wheel companies... and i wouldn't be surprised if they are making for some of the USA companies.. That's the thing when choosing 3 piece wheels.. you just don't know where the parts or who's actually making them for you. Company you are going through might be just a middle man.

ADV1... one of the most hyped company... Just great marketing.. This video kind of made me laugh..

ADV.1 Wheels 2012 Video - YouTube

Hey Phil,

I saw your painted interior pieces on another forum and ninja'dyour source for getting my interior panels painted too. They came out incredible! I'd post a picture but don't want to clutter your thread.

On another note, your posts about the wheel manufacturing process are very informative. It's really crazy how over-charged and mis-labeled those 3pc wheels are. I thought they were more special, but seems you are paying for design/style more than anything else.

Browsing around, I found some pictures of the G25s on an FD:

Awesome! Please post here as I would like to see your painted interior.

Regarding the wheels. Yeah. A lot of companies it's more of a marketing pitch to make it sound better than what they really are. Once I get back on my computer ill do a quick what do look for and what you can do to save money on food used mono forged wheels

Liking the detail on the new "RT" wheels - I'll be happy with either these or the TE37RT. Time to get saving!

Just picked up this set up to solve some issues with my 20B build. Will post some updated photos when I get a chance to do some work. I been working on my brakes recently when I had some free time.

One I bought holds 2 x Walbro E85 pumps. Quality is top notch and reasonably priced for what it is. Its made of billet aluminum.

More info on this unit: Radium Engineering - Blog - New Product Release: Multi-Pump Fuel Surge Tank

They also make some cool oil catch can. I'm about to order one of those also.

Its a great unit and hopefully I'll get it in the car very soon.

Meanwhile, I been working on the MB to getting it ready for some track days.. I haven't tracked since getting rid of the RX8 and now going to thrash around my MB since SSM and 20B's are on going project cars.

Just finished putting the SakeBomb Garage AP Racing BBK up front and Racing Brake rear.... on my spare SSR old school rims plasti dipped matte black. I have these on as I'll be doing some updating on the car and will be taking the wheels on and off. More updates later..

Photo from instagram with all on.

Phil, they definitely have some nice products on that website..... not cheap but when you're paying for quality components it comes with the territory.

Now I'm eyeing that Comp Catch Can to go along with the SBG Comp BBK
