MotoIQ Project [Rotary] FD RX-7

So I figured starting a build thread would help the reboot of my build...so here it is.

The Name

I've never been a fan of naming cars, but a friend of mine decided to take it upon himself and name my car Mjolnir, which is the name of Thor's hammer. Since Thor is the god of thunder and lightning and Mazda's slogan for the RX-7 was "Lightning in a World of Thunder" it seemed fitting.

The reason it is "Version 2.1" is because this is my second FD and am I changing a lot of parts that I previously installed on the car.

History

I bought the car from Fritz Flynn over 5 years ago (Sept. 2007) and it was an almost bone stock '93 black base model with 87k miles on it. Here are a couple of pictures of it after driving it home from Virginia.

I didn't waste much time and got to work building it. It was originally going to be a 100% track build and that shows in the build. Here's a list of most of the things that I did to the car.

Engine/Drivetrain:
- Large street ported engine by djseven
- Garrett ball-bearing T04R w/ 0.84 A/R divided T4
- Exoticspeed exhaust manifold
- Tial 46mm wastegate (dumped to atmosphere)
- Tial 50mm blowoff valve
- HKS v-mount intercooler kit
- A-Spec Tuning full 4" exhaust
- Custom dual 19-row oil coolers w/ thermostat
- Hyperion fuel anti-surge kit
- Koyo Radiator w/ AST delete
- ACT HD sprung 6-puck clutch w/ streetlite flywheel and braided clutch line
- Gotham Racing short shifter w/ custom bronze shifter bushing

Fuel/Electronics:
- RX-7 Store fuel system (1680cc secondaries, aeromotive fpr, etc)
- Denso (Supra) fuel pump
- Apex'i Power FC w/ Commander and FC-Datalogit
- Greddy electronic boost, water temp, egt gauges
- Greddy Profec B boost controller
- Innovate LC-1/XD-16 wideband O2 controller

Other:
- Knightsports CFRP hood
- Full delrin suspension and differential bushings
- Replaced all oem pillow ball bushings
- Eibach Pro-Kit springs
- Kirk Racing 4-point roll bar
- OMP RS seats
- G-Force 5-point racing harnesses
- Removed most of interior
- Removed stereo and all speakers
- Removed A/C
- Maval fully converted manual steering rack
- Relocated Odyssey PC925 battery behind passenger seat
- Hawk HP+ brake pads and stainless brake lines
- Personal Grinta 330mm steering wheel
- NRG Gen. 2 steering wheel quick release and short hub

Here are a couple of pictures the car at this stage...

In January 2010 I decided to go back to grad school and the engine was nearly complete. Over the next several months I did more work and went to have it tuned with the little money I had left to spend on it. While tuning, it was having some bad ignition breakup problems and we couldn't get it to run smoothly beyond 6000rpm and 14psi. Since I was basically out of money and couldn't afford to upgrade the ignition system and do a retune, I decided to park it in November 2010 and it hasn't moved under its own power since.

Version 2.1

So, now fast forward to today (or last fall when I started remaking plans for this build I guess) and my outlook on the project is a little bit different. It is still going to remain 90% track car, but I would like it to be driven on the street as well at least once every week or two. Realistically, this doesn't change my build ideals much, but it is something I am at least keeping in mind this time around.

So for Mjolnir 2.1, a lot of things are changing. I have already sold and purchased many new parts for this and will get into those changes in greater detail later, but for now...just a short list of things to come...

- New turbo: Borg Warner S300SX FMW
- New manifold: Full Race twin-scroll
- New wastegates: Dual Tial MV-R
- New ecu: Adaptronic - FD Specific
- New ignition: AEM IGN-1A
- New fuel system parts: 850cc primaries, custom surge tank and lines
- New exhaust plan: keep 4" and randomtech cat, change/add muffler, re-plumb wastegates
- Add water injection system
- New wheels/suspension/brakes
- A lot of rewiring
- etc etc etc.

Turbo, manifold, ignition parts, some water injection components, and a few other odds and ends have already been purchased, so things should start moving pretty quickly for me this spring.

It's been a while, but here is a little sneak peak of some of the new parts...Borg Warner S300SX FMW, Full-Race manifold, and dual Tial MV-R wastegates.

Another quick update.

I have changed my ecu plans. I sold my Adaptronic Select unit last week and will be picking up a Megasquirt MS3-Pro from diyautotune later this week. I will also be building a full custom wiring harness while I'm at it. There is already so much custom wiring needed that using a full wire-in ecu instead of a plug-and-play makes more sense.

Other big news that I have neglected to share thus far...my car is officially a MotoIQ (MotoIQ - Automotive Tech, Project Cars, Performance & Motorsports) project car. The first article should be finished this weekend and will be out soon.

Just realized that the picture above isn't linked properly. For some reason I can't get images to link to anything but the image itself anymore. Oh well...here is the link...

Long time no update, but finally finished with the work and writing of fuel system articles. Part 2 was published today and part 3 will be in a couple of weeks. Check it out

How loud is the fuel pump located in the fuel surge container? I would assume that it is significantly louder than locating the pump in tank?

The car is still in the process of being built, so I can't answer that question quite yet. I do imagine it will be louder than the in-tank pump, but whether it is by a significant amount or not I don't know.

Last year was a crazy year for me...got engaged, traveled way too much for work, and was maybe a bit too involved in my new hobby of 3D printing. All this lead to very little work on the RX-7, but this year is going to be different. I already have outlines and plans complete for my next two big updates....first will be setting up the oil coolers and ignition system. The second will be the big one...custom v-mount intercooler/radiator setup. Ultimately the plan is to have the car wired and driving sometime this summer.

Anyways...all the parts are here for the oil coolers and the work starts this weekend!

Dude... that OIl Therm is NEXT LEVEL!!!! VERY!!!! COOL!!! You know how many times I've looked at mine and disconnected a line only to have to trace it's origin while working on the car to figure out where the line went to?/Came from? haha.. If you could... I'd do that on both sides of that bad boy. I'd purchase one of those just for ease of useability!!! Or maybe I could send you mine and have you 3d Print on it? Would it have to be PC'd first? sorry for the thread jack....but that's seriously next level man!

Thanks, I'm excited about it too and that's actually how it comes directly from Earls...

I think a really good way to convert an existing thermostat to have markings like this would be to use an etching pen and carve symbols or letters into it. Then take some caliper paint and fill the letters (wiping off the excess). 3D printing technology wouldn't be particularly useful for something like this mostly due to temperature limits of printed materials.

The other thing I'm excited about is the -10AN ORB threads. My old Perm-a-cool thermostat was 1/2" NPT in/out which required adapters to -10AN. This added extra length to the thermostat and actually created a flow bottleneck since 1/2" NPT is essentially the same as -8AN. It also has built in mounting holes and 1/8" NPT sensor ports for pre and post cooler temperature monitoring.

Yep, actually started it here then got on with MotoIQ soon after. I was a long time reader and reached out to them primarily as a way to force me to fully document my build...which worked but is making it much slower than it might have been otherwise.
