Rebuild Series 3 RX7
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of rebuilding an RX7 replacing all the major parts (esp engine) with new ones. Unfortunately, I know nuts bout rebuilding. Can anyone give me an idea on whats it gonna cost and workshops in Perth that does it?
Does mazda still build rx7 engines?
Thanks!!

regardless whether Mazda rebuild them or not, I'd take it to a specialist rotary workshop (I unfortunately dont know of any in WA though)
A basic rebuild will set you back about 2k, that would be using your rotors and housings providing they are ok. ... if you got new ones of those, expect that basic price to double.
While its apart i'd at least extend port the motor, only a few hundred dollars.

in perth there is three or four rotary specialist workshops
- all with a very varied feedback , so its buyer beware
personally, i have always done it myself, , and that's reflecting quite a bit at the perth 'professional' scene
i have seen good and very bad over 20 years or daily rotary owning and modding in perth !
rotormotion will be the longest serving workshop in the country ,, with few, if no exceptions
they are always busy and never cheap
else there is factor Re
tenegah
and sanders racing
just to name all of the few
in a newbys shoes again--
, get the majority of the mech done possibly Not with a rotary specialist, saving LOTS on the hourly rate
( ie wilkinsons suspensions , carline exhaust etc )
- and enlist the specialist rotary workshop only for the engine build/ fit / tune

And don't forget to join up on your local rotary forum www.perthrotary.com or www.perthrotor.com for any help which you are more than likely gonna need. ha Ha!!!
I have a S3 too, so if there are any specific questions you need to now, i'm more than happy to try and help ya out. (to the best of my limited knowledge!)

I'm quite a newbie on fixing or modding cars.. so will need loads of advice n questions.. =)
*prays for patience from you guys.
lol.. i actually thought of buying a cheap one (good body n interior) then do a rebuild by purchasing a newer engine and replacing worn out parts with new ones. but im not too sure bout that. what do you guys think?
in a nutshell, what sort of mech that I should do on the RX7?
what parts should I take special consideration in performing a rebuild.
what factors of the car should I watch out for when I view n test drive them?
twin turbo, single turbo, type a,b,c's, etc which would be better (I'm looking for manual + 2 seater only)?
thanks alot !!

the car is entirely conventional
- if your budget is tight, if your expecting to use it regularly, and if your not the sort of bloke that doesn't mind a monthly fiddle
- then keep the engine of choice mild/ stock
as bridgeports SUCK at all the above criteria
if you want great power and reliability without the noise
at a niche where its still within limits of the stock diff and brakes and radiator
then a decent stock/ mild 13Bt install is unbeatable
- if instead you prefer simplicity and easy maintenance even for newbs,,,
then 13b 6 port with a mild weber and bypass fuel reg set up
and all with a van diff ratio is surprisingly good, and damn easy
( or maybe use an ex turbo block )
- the common hint is ,, rebuilding old 12a and old 13b is not cheap,, as housings and rotor pairs hard to find in good enough cond
-- but s4 onwards engines, even as good crate import engines
are usually worth the gamble to use as is provided they pass cursory inspection
- and they amount better than fairly good midly worked 12a or old 13b
due to reasonably generous stock porting and light rotors
each to his own,, both are great niches within the capabilities of most stock drive-line components
- NB
start to work the turbo ,, and diff, radiator, cooler, shaft and every thing else will soon find its limits
---------------
when buying look for the engine having been pre warmed ready---
-- a sure sign it smokes heavily on cold start
( and oil rings are rooted ,, means build,, means maybe your now chasing rotors and housings due to wear too !! )
- look for radiator boiling/ signs that coolant seals are shot, or worse housing or plate is corroded out
( equiv to blow head gasket )
-- a good engine starts easily, even if cold , and shouldn't smoke all that much aside from fuel puff smoke from various overcarbs
s3's have odd wheel pattern to other rx7's ,,
so keep that as the main identifier, as in perth , there is many imports and cross builds !
PS look for where the other money has been spent prior to purchase
new tail-shafts and radiators and brakes and suspension bushes are all great bonuses

You know.. I feel like a total fool.. I actually meant Third generation RX7 Series 8.. I apologise for the confusion that I've caused. I've created a new thread and posted the link here.
