Timing
Trying to install the new AEM ECU but my car is running horrible. AEM says I need to check the timing with a timing light so I can adjust it in the software to match up. Anyone know how to check the timing on a 93 RX7?

VBC,
Hook your timing light pickup to the lower front spark plug wire, The timing indicator is a small peg about the size of a bic pen tip a little to the left of center above the main lower belt pully. Adjust the timing with the computer to bring the notch in the pully in line with the indicator pin.
I also set the TPS low at an idle rather than with the engine off.
The fuel map is set very rich on startup, Lean it out to reduce surge in the idle. CAREFULLY !!!!!!!!
Good luck

Thanks, I'll try that. I've never used a timing light before so I wasn't sure where to put it. The shop manual isn't very specific about it. I'm assuming I don't need a special timing light for the rotary. Correct?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Just use the cheap timing gun from AutoZone or PepBoys.
The inductive timing guns are rather cheap and easily found.
Optical timing guns are high dollar.
Using the inductive timing gun, you can clip the power and ground connections to the battery and inductive clip over the leading plug wire. Shoot the gun at the main pulley when the car is warmed up and idling.
It'll strobe the timing light every time the leading plug fires (inductive pick up will trigger off the magnetic pulses created from current flowing through the plug wire). Make sure the white dot on your main pulley is lined up with the reference peg on the front cover.
