Been there, done that. Don't know if it'll get published, but gave my story to RX Tuner. Here's the opening to the article:
So, here I am again with an RX-7 in the garage. It’s been only a short time since I sold my much-loved ’93 RX-7 (about 18 months), but it’s been a fairly long journey through many cars. About a month ago, I decided that the ’93-’95 RX-7 (FD) was the car for me. I had been through several cars (see following) since selling the ’93, but none, IMO, can compare to what one can get out of the FD.

This is a story of what not to do when a loved one is lost. It’s also a story of how I went from three cars to six (as of right now), and the many others that have passed through my hands this past year or so. My wife Margaret tragically died of complications due to ALS in April 2004. One is always advised not to make any critical decisions within the first year of such a traumatic event. Well, I have become a poster-boy exemplifying why one is so advised. (But, I tell my kids, “I still have the house!”)

Long story short. Here are the cars I've been through this past year. All are sold except where indicated.

'93 RX-7
'01 Jaguar S-Type
'04 PT Cruiser GT
'05 Mazda6 Sportswagon
'99 Porsche 911 Carrera 2
'96 Porsche 911 Turbo
'03 M-B SL55 AMG (for sale)
'01 Audi S8 (keeper)
'01 Suzuki SV650S
’99 BMW 528i Touring
'04 Porsche 911 GT3 (for sale)
'99 M-B ML430 (for sale)
'01 M-B ML55 AMG
’05 Chevy Silverado 2500HD TurboDiesel (keeper)
’94 Mazda RX-7 (keeper)

The FD is THE car, IMHO.

I must admit to too much money, not enough sense!

I'm retired, both from the US Army and from private industry. Rather be lucky than smart. Cashed out my stock just before the dot.bomb.

Cool

We all have to realize that its not always about who goes faster than who for how much money. It is a bottomless and worthless convorsation. I will say this though. I would trade the fd i have even though it would problably beat the car i wan't. ferrari testerossa. Yes thier is a whole lot of people out thier that would make me look quite silly but i am not worried about that. I am getting it because i like it more than the other cars i can chose from. Plus the sound of an italian v12 is just sexy.

Back in Sep/Oct '92, not too long after I bought my '93 FD, I was at a business meeting in Santa Barbara, CA. There's a road out of there that goes up to a lake then hooks up with the main highway after about 60 miles.

Rather than do a beach play afternoon, I took the FD out on the road, and 'lo and behold right in front of me was a RED Testarossa. We had a great time. He would pull me on the straights, and, thankfully, there were not too many of those. But I'd be right there when we hit the curvies.

This was when the FD was stock. I'm sure the story would have been different by the time I had mod'd it many years later.

Here's why. While they may certainly turn nearly similarly, the Rx-7's handling is a lot more quirky. In a relatively soft suspension the Porsche can take turns as well as my FD but can handle the strain of road imperfections. Had Porsche wanted to make the Carrera as stiff as an FD then the car would probably have few equals on the road. Instead, they decide to leave it civilized while retaining as much of its precision as possible, and I would say that they did it quite well. Each bump doesn't tear you apart like an FD does, the linear engine allows for superb control, braking is spectacular, and the ergonomics really hold you into place -- you really can place the car into any position you want, and the car can turn whereever you wish it to go.

FD's were aimed towards the early 90's Porsches, but the automotive world is on an entirely new playing field now.
I certainly disagree with this, "To begin I would state that even a Carrera's, for example, handling characteristics are BETTER than that of an Rx-7." But it could be because of all my experience in an FD, taking it from 225 rwhp to 337 rwhp and 10-12 track days a year for 5 years (plus some autocrossing before that), and only a little over a year's experience in a Porsche.

First, I never took the 911 Carrera 2 on the track, so can't speak to that. The 911 Turbo is AWD, and has lots of nanny gadgets, so one can be a fool on the track, and still be OK. The GT3 has no helpers except ABS. One wrong move with it, and it will swap ends RIGHT NOW, and every experienced Porsche driver will affirm that.

Many P-car guys will say the adventure of a Porsche is learning how to drive (what I consider to be a designed-in engineering flaw) it's tail-heavy weight distribution. No thanks.

No question they are durable, reliable and nice looking. Are they worth the money. Like a M-B, I'd say no.

IMHO, buy an FD, dump $10-12K into it in mods, have equal drivers, and it'll eat a Porsche (at 1/3 the price). I intend to prove it by Spring. I have challenges from my P-car buddies who can't believe I'm dumping the GT3 in favor of my FD.

Damm all of you...

Make it so frustrating for a University student to become stock broker.

I want to see what is gonna happen for myself 2 years down the road. To be sadly honest Supra or Skyline seems a comming Porsche is nice but I would rather have something so rare noone knows what it is ( as is the case with rx-7).

Personally, I would not purchase a Cayman S in place of a FD, if I had the means. If I had the means to afford (read: afford, not purchase)it, that would also mean that I would have enough money to put a decent payment on a fairly nice home in Southern California. I am at an age where I would like to believe that I am pretty well off (financially). I would not consider a not-so rare Porsche a wise way to spend my money. Then again, I would also say that having a FD is not a wise way to spend my money. It will eventually blow a motor (rebuilds last even shorter than new OE motors), not to mention all of the other reliability issues it has.

A wiser "sports car" would be a Miata or a S2000, as both are reliable and fairly priced (when used). With that said, I would still rather have the FD. The FD is just much more fun to drive. This is going off of what jramosrx7 stated; it really comes down to whether or not you have fun with a car; this is the primary reason why I have kept the FD for as long as I have. I really enjoy driving the car (in every aspect). jramosrx7 had a GT3 at one point, and he still went back to the car that he enjoyed the most. Some people have the means to have filet mignon every night, but they still choose to have In-N-Out. The FD has great styling and performance, with reliability being it's only downfall. Though, all of this is not a totally justified statement. If I were to have owned/driven a Cayman S, I may feel differently about this situation.

Oh, and let us not forget that the Cayman S does not have a LSD!

I'm selling my FD and replacing it with a '68 Mustang fastback. Just because I want to build something else. I do love the way it handles and performs but I'm kinda bored now that it's finished.

As far as going fast, I'm well past that. I'd trade my fd for a new Range Rover in a heartbeat. I'm leaning on the wife to let me get one but so far it's a no go... That's been my "new" dream car of late.
