The Ferrari example is good, but to put the car into a relative price-class -- C5s don't come with wings. Vipers don't really either -- the RT/10 is flat and the GTS has a tiny lip. I see a lot of FDs in Japan (and rare examples in the US) with some of the nicer kits that would look 10X better without whatever wing they tacked on.

the 911 has a wing cuz it was for cooling purposes originally, and people grew to like it, so its still there.

I'm really having a hard time with this. I like the way my wingless car looks everywhere except form the back. It looks real weak in the back. I've seen the Feed adjustable on a CYM and thought it was super sweet but I dunno. I don't want a GT or shopping cart wing as I liek to call them exhibited here--->

at one point i liked body kits then realized for what they do i could get some serious performance. i mean think about it the money you drop on a kit/wing combo after having it painted coulve gone to a power fc, intake, turbo timer, exhaust, anything. also ive never really seen the point of aftermarket rims, once again i feel money can be better spent on performance. of course if someone had done abs everything to their car i could maybe understnd, but to me its a waste. one body type thing i do like would be an aftermarket hood but a functional one of course. oh and i like flush head lights.
my car has the factory wing and it doesnt bother me, but i do like the 99 wing better (but im not williing to drop the dollars on it)

Once you start pushing 300+ rwhp like lots of us, you will understand the need for upgraded rims and tires.
A car that makes that much horsepower just won't cut it on stock rims.

Well, I was "kinda" in the right price class. I think the Modena is the cheapest Ferrari out there right now....

Is my R1 wing functional??? Thats a heated debate, but it sure looks a hell lot better to me with it then it would with out it.
I also like the Newer 99 Style wing and the RB Type 2 wing.
I agree. I saw a 93 touring...red...and it didn't look right w/o the wing. Don't get me wrong..the car was awsome...but it looked unproportional to me...LOL.

I'm putting out 368 raging ponies to the ground on high boost, and my 245/45 SO2's on the stockers work decently enough. When I tracked the car at Motorsports Ranch, grip was phenomenal. They're not the best for the holeshot, but otherwise I can't say enough about the tires......

Rich, you also have the widest you should fit on stock rims, and some of the best tires money could buy.
If you were to upgrade to 255 or 265 and even 275's out in the rear or up front you would notice a big difference. I was just thinking the other day, I'm surprised that you still run the stock rims, with all the other mods you have. I think you should look into upgrading them sometime in the near future.
If you are into any kind of track racing, be it road, auto x or drag, I can't stress enough having and extra set of rims and race tires.

My first name is a cruel joke when you take into account the state of my fiscal affairs. Translation: Rich is Poor

This is 90% b/c of all the mods you talk about, of course.

I'll need tires sometime soon, and I really, really, really want some 17x8, 17x9 SSR GT1s w/SO3 skins on them.

Sigh......

i swore up and down...

...when i owned my touring that wingless was the way to go...
although these days....wingless with rear wiper..imho is less attractive than the R package....
body kits in general....most are destructive and unappealing

I personally like the rear wing. It does serve a pourpose (it's much easier to open the rear hatch) and if you don't care for the wing and want to improve the look of the rear of the car paint the tail lights and center light the same as the body color, really makes a difference.
Just my $.02 I have two stock R-1 rear wings for sale. Jack

I'm 19, have a touring and would never think of putting a spoiler on. I love how it looks without it.
Like rynberg said I haven't found any spoilers that look nice or any body kits that look nice on the rx7.
I do disagree though about the 99 spec front bumper. It's the same exact bumper as the stock 93-95 just a little enlarged and with awesome turn lamps. It's just a more modern copy of ours. I had to get a new front bumper the other one was making my car look old and like a miata from the front with those ugly *** turn lamps. Without the chin spoiler it was sick.
There is only one front end that I really love out of all of them for the fds and that is the border type 4 on this page http://www.takakaira.com/php/table.php3?id=285&cat=1#

I couldn't afford that right now but that is the one i really love along with the bbs wheels would just look killer I think.

There was a report awhile back with wind tunnel pictures, cd coefficients, and down force measurements. Don't remember where it was from, but here's a summry.
Body kits and wings will increase down force but at the same time increase drag (more dramatic the add ons, more drag). Originally designed for road course and track use, where the absolute top speed (effected greatly by the cd) is rarely an issue. The extensive body flares and the big *** wings serves the purpose of increasing down force at lower speeds (40-50 mph range). You can sort of use the analogy of using a smaller turbo for faster spool, but not having higher total power.

A side note for those performance minded individuals. If you havn't notice by now, the track cars have a very high wing while the drag cars have a wing that generally follows the line of the body and is larger in surface area. The reason is because the drag cars are looking for top speed, and by using this type of wing it will have less airflow disturbance, and yet maintain enough down force for traction and stability. (I know some wise *** is going to ask, so I'll say it here. The top fuel dragsters have a totally different body airflow characteristics than stock cars and that's another story)

That been said, there is a fine balance between df and cd. A good body kit/wing is suppose to help increase df while maintain (or even decrease) the cd. So the answer is yes they do serve a purpose. But for most of us, we hardly ever see occasions where that extra df is necessary (if you do and you're not on the track or shooting a movie, then you should be arrested). All the "kids" (I use the term loosely) see racing videos, movies etc. and want to make their own Neon "go faster" jumps on the bandwagon. Lately it's just been getting out of hand.

Really this is all just a matter of personal taste.

To me, the FD looks good with or without a rear wing/spoiler.

I personally like the clean simple looks of my base model, to me the lines of the car just flow better.
But it is not that I DON'T like the Touring or R models with the wing, they look bad-*** too.

Right now it seems like EVERY car has some sort of damned wing on it, and NOT having one on a car like the FD makes it stand out even more, in my opinion.
