Why would I buy an RX-7 when...

Hello all! I'm in the market of buying a decent sports car without a lot financial pain. However, after doing much price comparison, why would one want to buy a high mileage 93-96 tricked out rx-7 vs a low-mileage NSX for practically the same money ? Can anyone help me understand this? Your help is appreciated.

What price do you think you can get a NSX for?
i would say around 30k+, for that you can get one hell of a FD.

I looked at an NSX. No power, don't fit, and almost no aftermarket. Most low mi. well over the 40 thou.

Later, Jeff

Well unless you really love the RX7 i wouldnt get one over the NSX because you have to love the car or you will get pissed off at it quick. But as far as performance the stock RX7 will walk an NSX in every catagorie except 0-30, 0-40 and top speed. A highly tricked out RX7 will spank the pants off an NSX. But if you just in the market for a good looking sports car that will get some attention and has a good build quality Id go with the NSX.

I'm not too familiar with the NSX, but I think I remember reading comparisons, and a *STOCK* RX7 will pretty much match or out perform an NSX. You'll be able to buy an RX7 a lot cheaper than an NSX with similar mileage / condition.

I don't understand why you'd compare a modded high mileage RX7 with a low mileage stock NSX. I'd think the modded rx7 would still be cheaper than the nsx.

Agreed. An FD in stock form does perform well, but there are so many maintenance issues when they're stock that it's actually WORTH it to upgrade(AST, radiator, intercooler).

An NSX would be nice just to drive around in. Fairly good gas mileage for a sports car. Very sleek design...

...but not my FD

Dude, you obviously don't know cars very well. Even a 91 NSX is gonna cost you at least $35,000, whereas most 93 7's you can get for under $20,000 ---very low miles, good condition, etc. So, basically you're looking at a really high mileage NSX 91 or a REALLY low mileage 95 7 and the 7 is still gonna be cheaper. NSX's look sleek, but the 7 is just an amazing car and i can't wait til i get my hands on one.

Last time I checked even '91 nsx's are about 30k give or take 2 or 3 k.. You can get one hell of a FD for that price, it wouldn't be high mileage and it would be far past "tricked out" for that kinda cash. I believe a member (ErnieT) is selling his FD for around 30k, it has around 500hp and was hoping to go 10's in it. A 30k NSX won't even be close to that fast.

Don't expect to come here and for us to say "go buy a NSX", because most of us won't. The rx7 is a very "cultish" car, the people who have them love 'em.

Lots of good input so far. Avg $$ for 91 NSX 30-40K I've seen between 30-40k depending. I was comparing this to the latest tricked out rx-7 on ebay from 24-32K. At this range your hitting a lot of different type of sports cars, ie Corvettes, NSX ...the whole gambit. It's a confusing time... ; )

I was about to say the same thing. This past week I looked at a 94 nsx, they were asking about 40k.

Naah, they are just playing. Most of us here like the NSX very much.

At $40k, NSX aren't cheap and is about 2x more than what you would pay for a RX-7. If you have the money, that's a great car to have. Most of them are in great condition too, unlike the RX7. Many RX7 are in poor shape.

in this thread, i have heard people say again and again that the nsx is a sleeker looking car than an rx7. well buddy, with just 4000 dollars worth of money in body kits, the fd can be transformed into a drop dead gorgeous car. i have a red 93 r1 and i got a 99 front bumper, with side skirts, front and back spoilers, a steering wheel and a shift **** (and i am just trying to get a stock 99 rx7 look)- and i tell you, my rx7 looks better than any car! an nsx is nothing in comparison.

so bottom line: a low mileage 93-95 fd=18000. engine modifications = 8000. body modifications = 4000. and for 30000 dollars you have an rx7 that looks better than an nsx, that drives better than an nsx, that handles better than an nsx, that accelerates faster than an nsx, and lets not forget, that gets you more chicks than an nsx. and the best part, you save yourself money.

but, as some one said earlier, you have to love rx7s to get them, otherwise they will drive you nuts cuz they are HIGH maintenance.

I don't see the point in threads such as this because:

1) It shouldn't be my job to convince you to like a certain car over another. You obviously already have a liking for the NSX.

2) All cars have issues (some are just really small issues whereas others have large ones). Learn about the car that you have your eyes on.

3) Trying to convince you to like a car is pointless because in the end, if things didn't turn out the way you expected, you will be even more pissed because of the money spent, etc. You have to convince yourself.

Just to let you know, all sports car have some sort of maintenance requirement (which translates to your "financial pain"). In the case of the RX-7, it costs a lot more to maintain than others. Please use the Newbies sticky posted by "Johnny". It provides useful links.

I got the same thing when I looked for one a year ago. That's what made me return to the 7.
