Why are there Screws holding the Brake Rotors?
I broke one of the lug bolts on the front wheel, so i had to replace it. Everything was going smoothly until i had to take the Brake Rotor off. Those 2 screws are Fu**ing impossible to remove. I tried heating them up and still nothing. At the end i had to drill the damn screws out.
Most of the other cars i had to work on, like 300zx or 3kgt, they don't have those screws there at all. Do we even need those?
I'll probably have to go get 2 at the dealer, if they have them in stock.
What a day.

I believe they are on there simply to hold the brake rotors on while the car is on the assembly line without the rims on. I agree that they suck to remove, I broke countless screwdrivers and bits until I used an impact driver.

It is nice to have the rotors held flush to the hub in proper alignment. It's a MUST to use an impact screwdriver on those screws - anything else is a waste of time. BTW, it's a screwdriver that you whack with a hammer, not an air-powered tool.

$4.99 for one. I've got one, works GREAT. Make sure to use the right size bits for the screw you're working on - some friends borrowed mine and used the small bit on a big screw, broke the bit. Grrr...
Reinstall the screws with a little anti-sieze and you're good to go.

Are you talking about these screws (see attached picture)? I'm missing one.
You think I need to got he dealer or just buy it at an automotive parts store (Kragen, Pep Boys)?

I was hiting the stupid screwdriver on the screw and it made no difference. If you guys think it will be fine without it, i might just leave it.

The screws are not strictly necessary, as has been previously mentioned they merely hold the rotor nice and lined up while you put the wheel on. Once the wheel is on and the lugs tightened, that's what really holds the rotor. The screws also serve a second purpose, once the screws are removed they can be used as jackbolts in the two threaded holes in the rotor to pop a stuck rotor loose.

I dont think you guys realize how easy those screws strip out....
I have used an impact screwdriver on one, and strip it... and don't tell me i was using it wrong because i wasn't....
on the other hand i have been able to loosen them with a regular screwdriver....

Hmmmmm....I've taken dozen of these things out of many different cars and have never had the following fail:
Heat with a MAP gas torch.
Spray liberally with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench
Use impact driver.
Off comes screw.
When reassembling, just use a SMALL amount of anti-seize compound.
As for leaving them out....yeah you can do it but....I dunno, I am just one of those guys that has to have everything in place.
