Why to race from a roll and not a dead stop?
Alright, I know I am gonna get flamed... But I have never driven my seven, it has been sitting for like a year and a half now, and just waiting on parts and money. Now I have got all the parts coming, and was thinking of toying with the suspension...
I want to know the techinical reason why people suggest racing other cars on the street from a roll not a dead stop.
Thanks
Edan

Why race from a roll? Traction.
A lot of sports cars can be harder to launch, simply because they have so much power.
There are technical sides to the issue, such as having IRS, tire size/width/type, weight, RWD vs. FWD, MR vs. FR vs. AWD, but overall most people who want to race from a roll or mention it say it because their car loses a lot of distance to someone (STI/WRX) that CAN launch because of AWD and such and could mean the race I suppose.
I had the impression that Supra's can't launch well (Weight,IRS etc) while FD's have a slightly better edge being better balanced and less weight to launch with. Mustangs and F-body's launching better because of solid rear axles or something along those lines. And then, AWD being the best because of the power to the wheels.
If you ask me, I could care less, I don't think 1/4 mile is all that exciting (other than simply a definition of how "Fast" you are) and launching "Right" means big pain on your transmission/axles/clutch/tires. (Or at least trying to get it right too..)
Hope that helps..

Doh. Forgot about why a roll is better:
You are in a higher RPM from a roll, and you already have the tires spinning/car moving.
Drop a gear, or find your best RPM range (Turbo!) and take off from there. Bake boost, etc.

Racing on the roll is better for your car, not abuse to the tranny, differentials, etc. Not that racing is good for the car to begin with, but launching a car at high rpms is more abusive.

Yeah doing a race from a 40 roll or what ever is better on RPMs to get the turbo spooled up faster. I prefure doing 40 rolls or 50 ect just b/c it seams a little more fun to me. I seam to have better luck on taking domestics from a 40-140 or so.

because the stocker is only good for stock power levels, after that you need something that can take the abuse of clutch drops. then you need tires and very importantly, NO play in the rear suspension via bad bushings and such. you can't have your wheels hopping and breaking things.
drag launches are notoriously hard on drive line parts.

I would think that most people on here race from a roll because they didn't plan it out. They just saw _____(fillin the car) going down____(road) and procced to pick a race. Its rare that you catch a light with a worthy vehicle. I personaly like to race from a roll cause 1st and 2nd are all wheel hop and I'm not a skilled drag racer. I've also had a C5 and a viper both get pulled over, while try to stop light race me, cause they didn't see the under cover cop behind us. Its also dangerous to go flying through a intersection right as the light changes i.e. people running red lights. I've already had one guy total my mustang runnig a red light, but my next car was a FD so I didn't really mind letting his insurance pay for it.
