The FD does have a VIN stamped somewhere into the body itself, I believe up in the tranny tunnel somewhere.

Years ago I was at the shop when I was surprised by a task force coming in early saturday morning to inspect cars.....I told them go ahead as we were legitimate and had nothing to hide. They found one FD with no VIN on the dash or under the hood, so towed it away despite my efforts to the contrary.

Of course the owner was beside himself, luckily they found another 'hidden' VIN and returned the car.

- Driverside firewall
- Driverside dash
- Sticker on the door sill (not sure that counts).
Any others?

Since I sold my original dash and the idiots at the first chassis shop I hired cut the one off the firewall I'm very interested in this subject

Christian,

Like I mentioned up above, there is definitely another VIN hidden in the chassis. I'll see if I can make some phone calls and find the info.

I'd be interested to know, because I've had every piece of my interior and every removable body part of my car off at one time or another, and other than the door jamb sticker, the dash tag, and the stamping in the firewall, I've never seen another VIN tag, sticker, or stamping anywhere on my car.

Definitely not factory. Are you sure that it's the VIN? Starts with JM1FD...

No way glass came from the factory with vin. Probably added as a theft deterrent.

Uhm... where would you go to have your window glass acid etched with your vin number? it just seems kinda pointless because if they're going to steal your car and the rest of us *don't* have the acid etched VIN it's not going to be a whole lot of trouble to replace...

That in my opinion is a theft deterrent as much as a battery shut off switch.

The theory is that if somebody steals your car and intends to swap vins and sell it they will also have to switch out windows. Doesnt do much to prevent theft if the goal is to chop the car or take it to Mexico.

It is a common theft deterrent. In fact, many insurance companies used to give discounts to policy holders who had this done.

A battery switch is a theft inhibitor, as it cannot be seen. Vin's on the glass will deter rather than inhibit.

get the car on a lift and investigate. Please don't post what you find on here. I'd rather not this become public knowledge.

Pmed you with a picture, since it seems that the HUGE VIN in the "super-secret" location needs to be kept "super-secret".....
