Who here has "Specialty Insurance" on their FD???
Hi,
So, I'd like to know who here actually has their FD insured with any of the "specialty insurance" companies available? I'm primarily interested in hearing from people who have "actual value" policies with either Haggarty or Grundy Insurance. I've read all the threads posted on this subject, talked to a few VERY helpful forum members, BUT the one thing lacking in all of those discussions was the experience from the people who actually hold these policies.
I've already done my research, have all my receipts, appraisal has already been performed and I know all the conditions and requirements necessary to qualify for this insurance. I was just hoping for some help in answering some of the more technical questions:
1- What company did you choose (Haggarty or Grundy)? Any specific reason?
2- Insurance agent's personal information (Name, number, etc.)? PM me if you don't feel comfortable providing this information here, PLEASE!!!
3- What classification is your car insured under i.e. exotic, classic, muscle etc?
4- Was your FD "complete/finished" prior to obtaining the policy? Is it necessary for the car to be complete or will a "project" car qualify?
5- Does an agent or appraiser actually come out to inspect the vehicle prior to issuing a policy?
I'm sure I have more questions, but that's all I can come up with at the moment. I would appreciate it if this thread didn't become cluttered with questions regarding the basic requirements of these policies. That information is readily available both on this site as well as on each respective insurance site. However, if you do have any questions along the lines of my own or this thread PLEASE feel free to post/ask. I'm sure I could use that information as well .
Thanks in Advance,
Rizwan

you can pretty much get any insurance company to intergrate your policy for a higher amount than what your cars worth.
alot of people on the forum have there car insured for $30,000-$40,000

hey guys... im an insurance agent here in california for AAA
most specialty lines insurance only offer for vehicles over 20 years old
with the exception of a few like haggerty/grundy... although exceptions are made
on a regular insurance policy, you can have them insure your vehicle for however much you want... but that doesnt mean your going to get it because they do not require an appraisal. and even if you have one, by the time something actually happens to the vehicle chances are its going to be out of date
not to mention... specialty insurance is made because anyone who buys it doesn't drive the vehicle usually over 5k miles a year... and therefore does not want to pay the price to insure a $50k replacement cost vehicle for the rediculous price of a regular policy... hence why specialty insurance is so cheap!
if you guys have any questions on anything let me know...
haggarty i have heard nothing but good things on, but they are strict on there mileage guidelines.
grundy never heard of them, they might not be in cali...
if you have a AAA near you, you might have access to our classic car policy, which is extremely good, and matches up to others, but we have the 20year rule.
and make sure you keep an updated build sheet on the car!

Good luck. I tried to get an agreed on value policy from those you listed but had no luck as the FD was not old enough. I had a lead on doing this thru Sate Farm and even filled out the application with pics and everything but was rejected because my car is a 20B and Sate Farm was unwilling to ensure a modified $50K+ car.
So that left me where I'm at now, with Progressive and a $60K stated value policy. I have all of my receipts so if/when I need to, I'll be in the best position to haggle with the adjuster.

I have collectors insurance on my 93 through Heacock.
Grundy told me they wouldnt insure an FD, even though I was able to get a quote online from them.
Haggarty approved me and said they would insure me had my daily driver been "significantly newer" than the vehicle I was trying to insure, at the time my daily was the '87 Chev Sprint turbo.
Heacock had insured a friend, so I called them up and they told me they wont do RX7's. I mentioned my friend they insured and they said somebody had made a mistake, but they would insure me since they did my friend. They told me they wouldnt do any more rx7's, my limit was 3000 miles a year, and they would only insure $15,000 agreed value.
What could be taken away from this is that Haggarty is probably the only one that will insure you, and you need a "significantly newer" daily driver to get on with them. I believe their mileage limit was 5000 per year.
I dont have the agents name or number in front of me, would have to dig that out. I can do it if you want to give them a shot.
My car is not classified as exotic, muscle, or anything. Its just a "collectors car" as mine is a collectors car policy. I pay less than $300 a year for $250 full coverage deductible.
My car was not quite finished. I told them it was a nearly completed restoration but I dont remember for certain if I finished getting it together before the insurance was active.
Nobody came out to inspect it. I just sent them a couple pictures for the records.
Hope this helps.

The problem with all those specialty insurance co's are their restrictions. As TomR1 pointed out you need a very new (as in under 10 sometimes 5 years old) daily driver. The car has to be garages and under lock & key. There are mileage restrictions, some as low as 3,000 miles/yr. The one restriction that was the turn off for me in every company that I went through was, "You CANNOT drive your car to work," regardless of circumstances. It didn't matter how many times I argued that my commute is <7 miles (at the time), there are fewer than 30 cars in my office parking lot, I have a window office, I am usually the first one here so I can park where I can see my car that is alarmed so should anything happen I am always watching it. It didn't matter. It went to the VP of American Collectors for a rider approval but was ultimately denied. I even pointed out and asked that if I'm stuck in rush hour traffic on the GWB becuase I'm going for a joy ride I'd be covered but not on the 7 mile commute? They answered "No," I shook my head and went through my regular company. I have Allstate (for all my auto and home & boat anyway) with an agreed value policy that was 133% of my appraised value. I plan on re-appraising every 2 years and I have all my reciepts as ammo.

Haggerty wouldn't insure my car, even though I have another older "collectible" car insured with them. But that was a few years back and I've forgotten the reasons they gave. Good thread anyway, because it's reminded me to look into an agreed value policy with others. Maybe even give Haggerty another try.

I've been trying to get mine insured by Haggerty but they keep telling me the rx7 is not collectible yet and will not qualify. this was last year so I need to call them back as they said it may qualify for the exotic car insurance. anyone have a name of an agent at Haggerty that I can call who knows about these cars?

1. Insured through Grundy. Hagerty said they would not insure my car. I think it may be an advantage to work through an agent. I called Hagerty directly, Grundy was through an agent.
2. Tom Foltz - website is http://gotinsurance.com/. They list the states where they can write insurance. This may or may not matter when they are working with Grundy.
3. Sorry, don't remember.
4. My car was in a completed state. That meaning it was drivable and in excellent condition.
5. No inspections, I just sent pix.
