Where's a good de-flooding how-to?

In the 13 years I've had my FD I've flooded it a few times. Never a big deal, I'd give it a little time, try again later and it'd start up.

Well somehow I got this thing flooded so badly I haven't been able to get it started for weeks.

I'm at the point where I need the fool-proof way to get it started. Or, the step-by-step how-to guide.

I've tried changing the plugs and turning it over a lot with the EGI fuse removed, but still no go. Figured I'd try removing the plugs but I need to be sure I do it right this time.

Thanks!
Wade

Remove the leading plugs
put a bit of oil in the combustion chambers
replace plugs
crank it a bit with the egi fuse removed
replace the fuse
start it up

bad flooding washes the sealing oil from the combustion chambers and the engine can't build compression to start. Adding oil to the chambers aids in buildng compression again and it will start.

I like to change the plugs, pull the fuel pump fuse then just crank it (leave egi fuse in so it will hopefully spark a bit and clean things out)

If you cannot start it by the fuel off system and the new plugs do not work For a really flooded engine ,tow start in 2nd gear, slowly engage the clutch till the engine is turning over keep it up till it finaly coughs back to life keep your foot on the gas ,so as it runs at a fast idle1500-2000rpm it should put out tons of white smoke at the start then slowly tapper off,in most cases poor starts(flooding) are a result of bad spark plugs, a bad vacuum leak or low compression,or poor grounds

Best de-flooding method, but there's a slim chance of a fire occurring. Best to have a fire extinguisher or something else (garden hose :shrug on hand in case of one. A few members have caught their cars on fire doing this.

I've flooded twice. The first time I followed the full procedure injecting atf in plug holes, new plugs etc. Not too difficult.

The second time I flooded though, I simply floored the gas pedal and cranked it a few times, 10 seconds each time, to purge the fuel from the chamber. She eventually started after 3 or 4 attempts. I'm told that the stock ecu as well as the PFC both have a failsafe where if throttle is 100% while cranking it stops the injectors from spraying. Worked like a charm. Have a set of jumper cables handy though in case you kill your battery.

Thanks for the help guys. Mahjik, yup, I'm still around... barely! For the past 8 years my car hobby has taken a major back seat to other things.

So confirm for me... the EGI fuse will cut ALL fuel and spark, right? Just want to be absolutely sure. Worried a little about the safety of shooting gas out of the spark holes.

Sounds like I just washed the chambers too clean with the gas. I'll try the steps in that thread you linked in.

After this episode... I'm going to reinstall the wax rod warmup system. It's what lead to this flooding in the first place. Big pain in the ***, just one of those mods I wish I'd never done.

Thanks!
Wade

Still couldn't get it going, even after turning it over without the EGI fuse and no plugs, then oiling the chambers and putting everything back.

What's next? Does ATF work better than oil? Anyone want to tow it away?

Never had a flooding problem on our FD, but I know this ECU feature is built into the 1990 Miata. And it definitely works on that car.

I'm going to test the ignition. Maybe the amp went bad. Crossing my fingers...
