Do a search, everybody has their own opinion on oils. Most of the people I noticed run Castrol 20/50, 10/30.

Use a Mazda OEM filter, they have the "anti drain back" valve or something like that.

Thumbs up

GsrSol is right...Use 20-50 weight Castrol GTX for the summer and 10-30or the cold winters up in Canada...

Use a Mazda filter $5.....The fake ones at the store suck...Fake as in Fram, Purolator, Wix, Penske, and AC Delco

Yeah my pureone and k&n gold filter suck. You much better going with OEM stuff than aftermarket stuff. Stay with the stock radiator, act, trubo's, etc....
All that aside, the stock Mazda (Denso)oil filter is a good filter, but is by no means the best filter. I like the Pure1 and K&N, I also use the MX-6 sized filter that is slightly larger than the MX-5/RX-7 filter.
Castrol GTX is a good choice for mineral oil.
Change the oil yourself if your that concerned about the filter and oil going into your car. You'll save yourself money in the long run, it only takes about 5 minutes to change when you get good at it.

Give me some info on the mx6 filter. Does it fit good? From what year mx6? 4 or v6? Anti drain back valve?

If its bigger and fits I'll switch!

Mazda OEM filter and 10W -30. Read your Owner's manual. A lot of highly paid engineers spent a lot of time figuring this out. 90% of aftermarket oil filters are pure junk.

Here is a pic of the box with the oil filter number. The fit is perfect, and provides more surface area. It also has the anit-drainback valve.

When you refill the coolant, don't forget to go through the proper purging procedure. (It should be posted on the Robinette site, or somewhere like that.) It'll take some time to do. You've got to get the air out of the system. The FD has unusual cooling system with its highly slanted radiator and whatnot.

After you've filled it, you've got to run the car a bit, let it cool, then remove the fill cap above the waterpump and refill so the holes to the coolant lines are covered up. You'll have to repeat this procedure several times until the coolant level stays above the holes. See Robinette or one of the other reference sites for a better explanation.

All of the response on filters is great! My preferred oil is Havoline 20W50 as it has the least parafin in it...Castrol and Valvoline are very close to the Havoline in this category.

Is there any place to get the OEM Mazda Oil filter cheaper? The last time I went to Mazda to get one, they charged me about 7 bucks.

My Local Mazda Dlr (Perry Mazda Santa Barbara CA) sells them to me at 2 for $10 even out the door.
I also use the Purolater Pure-1 (#PL14459) listed in the catalog for early FCs & T-IIs - it's slightly larger than the Later FC & FD OEM Filters.
for Oil use Castor GTX, Havoline System 3, 10-30, or 20-50 or Mobil-1 15-50 (if you have money to burn)
Just remember that in a rotary even full synthetics NEED TO BE CHANGED AT 3000 mi OR LESS!

Castrol 10-30 bc my engine runs pretty cool.

I've used Mazda OEM filter for 2 yrs and recently switched to PureOne. I think Mazda's is better. I will switch back to OEM. It's smaller but seems to keep the oil golden longer.

The Glass Man, I always wondered what your avatar was, but I watched Unbreakable last night and it all makes perfect sense now.

Does anyone know if the OEM mazda oil filter that is sold stateside (stamped with Tennex on the side) has the anti-drainback valve?

I bought four of these before a friend mentioned that the american filters might not have this feature, and the only way to see this is to cut one open. Seeing as how Don Kott Ford/Mazda charged me $11/filter (!) I am hesitant to waste one just for the sake of discovery.

What makes me feel stupider is that Tony's shop (Rotary Xecret) is on my way to work and he's selling the same filters at $7 per.

If anyone has cut one of these open and knows of the presence/absence of the valve, I'd really be interested in this information.

I use the Purelator filter too, and castrol GTX 10W30. I am probably going to do a test on filters this week, so I'll let u guys know what I find out. I will test the Pure 1, OEM, and fram. Possibly the Wix too. Any suggestions on what oil to use in these tests. I was going to use 10W30 Havoline for the tests because I can get it for wholesale prices. I'll post a thread when I finish the tests. I'll probably put about 500 miles on each filter and compare the color of the oil afterwards. I will take care of other variables so the tests will be as acurate as possible.

Oil Filter Tests/Comparisons Link

For all of you interested in learning more about oil filters, here's a link to an oil filter test/comparison that seems to be very comprehensive.

Just as important as the anti-drainback valve is the bypass valve which pops open if oil pressure suddenly skyrockets due to a oil pickup screen clog or other internal blockage, or even overfilling the crankcase. It allows unfiltered oil to recirculate until oil pressure is reduced back to normal, at which time it shuts and allows normal filtering. It's a critical component to prevent blowing oil seals and gaskets so I'd stay with the OEM and product-tested Mazda one. It's 5-7-buck cheap insurance, and be sure to read the OEM fine print on any aftermarket warranty you may have.

Been using the OEM filters. Signal gives them to me so not complaining. Haven't had any problems with it and i trust OEM.

Mobil 1 20-50 oil.

I too use the Purolator Pure One filter (the blue one) for the same year MX-6. It's a taller than the stocker so you get more filter area. A bit snugger under the elbow, but enough. This filter also has the anti drainback valve.
