What kind of clutch do you have in your RX-7?

I am doing a 5 spd conversion on my 93 touring FD. I have a few modifications planned while I am doing this conversion but I am still stuck on what clutch to get! I have looked at the ACT HD and the ACT Xtreme (both street/strip). I am looking for something decent for street driving and yet still aggressive when I go to AutoX events. I will be eventually doing a GT35R turbo setup or a Borg Warner S200 setup. I don't plan on running any higher than 450hp but it may happen later on at which time I will upgrade accordingly. My question is what kind of clutch do you run? How has it worked for you? How much did it cost and where did you get it? Any recommendations?

i see (by your sig) that you are interested in the same clutch kit that i just purchased. well, i'm installing it tomorrow so i'll let you know how i like it once the car is back on the road!

http://srmotorsports.com/sr93clch.html

SR Motorsports lightweight flywheel, Mazda counterweight, hardware kit, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, pilot bearing seal, alignment tool, and complete Extreme clutch set. (street/strip) - $939

i had a ACT clutch in my previous FD as well and really liked it.

I probably should have mentioned that I plan on using the stock flywheel. I have a friend who does a lot of drag racing and told me that a heavier flywheel is better for the rotary because it doesn't have a lot of torque and that the rotating mass of the stock flywheel adds some torque for faster launches. I am not really certain on whether or not this is true but I do already have a stock flywheel that I will probably install. I am not certain as to whether or not I need a counterweight or not yet but I will be certain soon. Thanks for your reply and suggestion on the ACT clutch that SR Motorsports offers. I hear a lot of good things about them.

I used spec clutch stage 3

http://www.specclutch.com/

That is what I got. Very drivable but yet agressive when needed. A friend of mine that has an around 400bhp 7 is using one hiegher than mine and is doing fine too.

I had an excedy before the spec but as soon as I had the chance to try it out on another car I change to it and do not regret it at all. The car now feels nearly as good as when I was using its original clutch but it can now handle a lot more of load.

Yes, the heavier flywheels are generally better suited for launches. However, if you are mainly going to do Auto-X, then you might want to look into a lightweight flywheel.

As for the counterweight, the stock manual flywheel has the counterweight built in. If you switch to an aftermarket lightweight flywheel, then you'll need a counterweight.

For what its worth, I ran the Racing Beat flywheel and the ACT S/S clutch for a while. I ended up going with the same flywheel and a Racing Beat sprung 6-puck clutch for road course driving.

Exedy Twin Disc. I had the ACT Extreme clutch and it died rather quickly. I make ~420 at the wheels and it didn't handle it very well. I'm very happy with my Exedy Twin.

I am looking at combining the ACT Xtreme pressure plate with the Madzatrix Street/Strip Clutch Disk and the ACT Pro-Lite Flywheel.

I picked up a Mazdacomp flywheel and was wondering do I need to purchase a seperate counterweight for this flywheel (where is more what I am asking...) since it's lighter and is going in a AT to MT conversion. I will probably be buying a Spec Clutch Stage 2, or 3.

Unless it has a counterweight built in, you will need an auto counterweight. if you have the stock auto, you may have a counterweight that you can use.

That is what I was going to point out. The counterweight you need you should already have and it will save you the $120 for a new one. I cannot see any reason that you could not use the one you have...

And I am also an exedy twin disc. Not quite broke in yet so I am afraid I cannot give much feedback on it..

I wasn't sure if I could use the Auto counterweight or not. I was under the impression that the counterweight would have to be a different size because of different flywheels weights. If I can use the auto one already on the car I can simply just order my Spec clutch (stg 2/3 havent decided) and prep the car for the tranny swap.
