What happened?

This is probably a sad story, let's see. I bought a 1993 RX7 with 51K miles a week ago, the turbos, clutch and tranny had all been rebuilt by a shop prior to my purchase, virtually no miles on those. After driving the car for a day, the thermostat started sticking, took it in and got that fixed.
So I took a drive to the beach, about 1 hr away. Almost all the way home, there was a whinning sound that got higher with more rpm. I'm doing the speed limit and had not taken the car above 70 since I got it. The whinning stopped, I look out the back and see lot's of white smoke, lot's. Oil pressure dropped a bit, but not to 0, water temp stayed constant, in the middle of the guage. The car continued to run fine. I drove the few (maybe 5) miles home. Temperature never got above 1/2 way. After a mile or so, the white smoke stopped, oil pressure is low, temp fine. I get home, open the hood, the engine smells HOT, the cooling system is pinging like it's hotter than it should be, and a check of the oil reveals, almost none.
Any ideas what happened and how messed up this is? Thanks.

Had a similar experience:
1. loud whining noise= Primary turbo was shot. It was rubbing on the housing.

2. Lots of white smoke when driving, and startup= Oil from primary was leaking into housing causing all the smoke. It would smoke real bad between shifts!

Had to consistantly fill it with oil because the turbo ate it up! If I were you I would search ALOT! for this problem. Some people have had problems with the oil seal inside the motor itsself. Either way you may be looking at a nice chunk of $$ to fix it. Good luck! D

Whatever you do, fill up the oil before running it!!! Rotary engines die quickly without cooling or oil.

But how could the turbo be shot, it was just rebuilt, by what I understand is a very reputable shop, corksport in Vancouver, Wa.

This thing pours out thick, white smoke. Can't be driven, I would blind whoever is behind me. Having just put oil in it and started it, it starts fine.

AAAKKKK!

whining noise as you go up in the rpm could be a drivetrain related problem..driveshaft, tranny itself etc etc..

who rebuilt your parts??

and just a heads up but just because those parts were rebuilt with no miles on it, doesnt mean it was done right..i would go back and find out who rebuilt everything since they were the one who did it and obviously they didnt do something right..

From my understanding you can't really "rebuild our twin turbo's" I looked into this for a while before I decided to go single. I talked with "Magestic Turbos"(Very well known here) and the guy said it's a gamble when you rebuild these particular turbo's. He said most of the time these units get worn so bad that they're basically junk!

When you had this "whining noise" would you here it only when you were on the gas? Were you boosting?

Please don't my advise too seriously! I'm no expert on this, just hope it helps narrow the problem down. D

The turbos were rebuilt by Corksport in Vancouver, WA as part of a prepurchase process that the dealer I bought the car from did. So I purchased the car with literally 0 miles on the turbos.
Anyone have any experience with Corksport? Anyone know of a good shop in the Portland, OR area?
