Looks like somebody doesn't want help that badly...
The only difference in Japanese and USDM RX-7's (of the same model year) is that one is RHD, and the other is LHD. The only reason why some Japanese cars came stock differently than their USDM counterparts is because Mazda stopped selling them new in the states after 1995, but kept producing them for Japan and the rest of the world into 2002.
Hence why people will by "99 spec" items, still stock body parts, just from a more current model.
Keep in mind that you are new to a forum of car fans of an almost religious level... Chances are you won't be teaching anybody here anything profound about the vehicle for some time... so it might not hurt to keep your attitude in check if you want help with stuff (nobody likes an insolent smartass)

What you say is true, people on this forum knows more about the RX-7 than I do. I respect people that offer me help, if they are trying to help. If you read the post that mine was replying to, it's perfectly clear that the person was not helping. Flaming is a waste of webspace. Its neither productive nor constructive. I don't think what said was out of line to the flamer. If you still believe that such comments are words of "help" then I have nothing more to say in my defence.
P.S. I didn't start this thread looking for help either. I was just curious about the difference. I already bought my car so it's not like it's going to help me do anything about it.

In north america we have branded anything labeled as type R as hondas/acuras trying to be fast (and some actually are, sadly) But in Japan, the label of "type R" is actually a really big marketing tool. Even the skyline dipped into that sauce (gtR model).
Yes I own a '92 type R. They where marketed as type R, X, and S in Japan. Type Rs are the best, as you will see on your FD, that it is equipped with dual oil coolers, spoiler, and most likely more performance goodies.
Sadly only the type X was equipped with a sunroof, and are actually quite rare as far as importing goes, I only say 5-10 of these as compared with the 50-60 type rs, and 40 or so base models.
Ohh and BTW there are a few diffrent versions of the type R. the one you will be getting is the 255hp version, NOT the 280hp (series 7) that came out late 90's. We cant import those bad boys just yet :S

Ohh you can check for dual oil coolers when you get your car, its really easy: just look for the small (5 inches by 5 inches) radiator looking things, they are in the openings of the front air dam on the right and left of the main rad opening.

Ive got an JDM R2, and its designed as a track FD that someone could potential take straight to the track after purchasing. Its light, had better suspension, and slightly increase boost for higher output. The type R2 also got twin oil coolers and higher gear ratios which are the same as the later RS version. It was also the lightest FD ever made at 1,250kgs.
The type R1 had 4 seats, while the R2 was a much more revised car, with two seats and Mazda improved alot of faults present in earlier models.

Also, I've never heard of any R1s coming with rear seats. Are you sure you're not thinking of the Type X?

I thought only JDM FD came with the 2+2 option? And the guy earlier said type X came with a sunroof, which mine doesn't.

Well, I was too busy learning about how to work on the actual car and the REW, rather than subtleties of the JDM fan-boy terminology.
I don't give a **** what something is called in another country and I didn't realize he was outside the US. You could have left it at mahjiks comment and been done... but you had to prove your immense knowledge of useless dribble.

If you have been reading the previous posts you'll learn that it's not just a difference in name, nor is it useless dribble. Putting aside the fact that RX-7 originated from "another country", I started this thread looking for people to post their knowledge. And people wouldn't be so negative about your post if it wasn't so prejudice and rejected everything.
You should have searched or looked in the FAQ to begin with, so don't get all butthurt over some offhand comment I made. Knowing every trim level in every country is as useless as dribble gets, especially when I can't import them into my country.
Finally, I don't care what people think about my post in a useless thread that happens virtually every week.

Some people take my bullshitting too seriously... The fact that there are different trim levels of FD's is obvious, while you're intelligence and sense of humor isn't.

What Alex is saying is that you could have EASILY searched to find the answer you were looking for..
Have you even read through the FAQ yet?
Every question you have has been asked already, ALOT.. use the search button at the top of the screen. And don't get so offended/defensive over little things.
When you ask bullshit questions then yell at people, who have been on forever, for giving you off the cuff responses... Chances are, when you have a legit question you will have already offended the people who can actually help you out.

out of curiousity are you from richmond?
you seem like you're from richmond really.
please stop acting like a geek, you are embarrassing fd owners. wait until you get your fd until you start making threads trying to look special because you have a jdm fd (yes we know you want to feel special). no one cares. if you are from richmond like i think you are there are already a million asians driving rhd skylines and fd's and other rhd cars around you. not special anymore.
anyway just wait until you get your car and just pray the shipping co's dont wreck it on its way over or steal **** from inside of it. then once you have it focus on things that are actually important like what are you going to do if your engine is blown when you pick it up, when you're going to replace the stock radiator and hoses, and when you're going to replace the boost gauge which will be inaccurate if it even has one.

bigwillie always has a lot of info that makes me scratch my head.
No really, the R1 had rear seats and the R2 had 2 seats only. I know this because i have many friend who have an R1. Type X never came in manual and usually had red leather seats.
The R1 also didnt come with twin oil coolers as far as i know.
I was under the impression that mazda ever so slightly increase some boost to allow for a higher output on the type Rs.
