What exactly IS a type R?
I've seen all these ppl selling their "1992 RX7 Type R" (including the vehicle that I bought and waiting to be shipped). When I try googling it, I only found information about spiritR, type RZ, blah blah blah but almost no information on type R. I wonder if they really produced a type R in Japan in 1992, and what exactly is the difference to the normal RX7 series.

lol as a matter of fact, I already paid for it, and the car was indeed imported from japan with right hand drive. I've done some searching on wikipedia and I got the following info about "RS and RZ"
Series 8 (January 1999– August 2002) was the final series, and was only available in the Japanese market. More efficient turbochargers were installed, while improved intercooling and radiator cooling was made possible by a revised frontal area. The seats, steering wheel, and front and rear lights were all changed. The rear spoiler was modified and gained adjustability. The top-of-the-line "Type RS" came equipped with a Bilstein suspension and 17" wheels as standard equipment, and reduced weight to 1280 kg (2822 lb). Power was 280 PS (276 hp, 208 kW) (with 330 N·m (243 ft·lbf) of torque) as per the maximum Japanese limit. The Type RZ version included all the features of the Type RS, but at a lighter weight (at 1270 kg). It also featured custom gun-metal colored BBS wheels and a custom red racing themed interior. Further upgrades included a new 16-bit ECU and ABS system upgrades. The improved ABS system worked by braking differently on each wheel, allowing the car better turning during braking. The effective result made for safer driving for the average buyer.
Still I have no solid evidence that this is the "Type R" and nor does it match the production date that these so called type R's on sale have. Anyone else have any clearer sources?

As far as im concerned the best RHD series 6 FD WAS the type R, it was the light sports model. I also happen to own one.

If it has no sunroof, is 5 speed and has cloth seats(mind you some may have leather) and if it has dual oil coolers then it is a type R. The biggest deciding factor is the sunroof/dual oil coolers.

Ok, it has no sunroof, it is 5 speed, and has cloth seats in the front and leather seats in the back. I'm not sure how to check the dual oil coolers though. I don't have the car yet so I can't check either unless you can see it from a picture of the engine lol.

tan suede(ish)...fancy. we didn't get that here.
The car looks like it's been hacked up and sewn together with bubble gum. There's no way to tell what's original and what's not, on that car. Well, obviously the mirrors are aftermarket.

The only thing different from stock is the turbo pipes have been swapped from plastic to metal tubing, the intercooler+radiator is aftermarket, and so is the air filter. The battery has been switched with a smaller one to make room for the larger front mounted intercooler. Also a PowerFC unit has been added as well as turbo timer. As for body mods, as far as I can tell its only the front bumper, mirrors, and rims. =P

The Auto RX-7 only had one oil cooler but some of them had a second oil cooler for the auto trans. The Type R's all had twin coolers and no sunroof, suede seats and thats really about it. The jdm rx7s all have a sticker on the drivers door shut with details of the car and what type it is.
The big difference in models are the Type RB, RS and RZ's then the three types of spirit R's they all have different factory specs depending on model, bigger brakes, wheels, fixed carbon kevlar bucket seats etc.
Then there are the auto ones which I know nothing about.
This is not a flame but more of a correction for the above statment, your front bumper is not stock.

The only difference in Japanese and USDM RX-7's (of the same model year) is that one is RHD, and the other is LHD. The only reason why some Japanese cars came stock differently than their USDM counterparts is because Mazda stopped selling them new in the states after 1995, but kept producing them for Japan and the rest of the world into 2002.
Hence why people will by "99 spec" items, still stock body parts, just from a more current model.
Keep in mind that you are new to a forum of car fans of an almost religious level... Chances are you won't be teaching anybody here anything profound about the vehicle for some time... so it might not hurt to keep your attitude in check if you want help with stuff (nobody likes an insolent smartass)

That is incorrect, all FD3S RX7's have the same body panels whether made in US or Japan. They all had alloy bonnets, same bumpers etc from factory except if they had mazdaspeed panels and so on but I am not sure if mazdaspeed were factory options or not. However I have heard a rumour that RS and RZ models came out with alloy doors (I am yet to prove this though).

Thanks for your info, I didn't know if they were the same before that's why I used "might" lol. I knew my front bumper isn't stock though and I mentioned that on the post before.
So how can you tell if it's an Rs/RB/Rz? Can you do it from that sticker on the door? I havn't got the car yet so I don't know exactly what it is. =P and if I'm correct I think 1 option of the spirit R (I think type C)came in auto-transmission too.
