What exactly is the Efini symbol supposed to be?
I love the way it looks, but does anyone know where the symbol originated, when and why it was used on the Japan FDs, etc?

Rich,
I am surprised at you for not knowing
Efini stands for infinity in French(Although I took 5 years of French, I never learned that - Je parle francais un peu!).
Now look at the Efini symbol. Does it look like a stylized infinity symbol? It sure does to me.

so what years did they sell the 7 as an efini, and was it marketed as a different brand a la acura/lexus, as mentioned above? I've heard alot of b.s. about the whole Efini thing, but not much in the way of definitive answers.
And I took french for three years in high school--guess I didn't learn all that much

OK, Rich. Let me set you straight.
First, I am not as old as you think I am. On second thought, maybe I am
Anyway, I believe that the 2nd gen Rx7 was when the Efini models were started. They were, however, called Infini or Anfini. When the third gen RX7's were introduced in Japan in 1992, they had the efini badges.
As far as I know, there was/is no upscale division of Mazda in Japan.

I remember that first MADS, when we were speeding on the highway (my dad driving my 7) and we were trying to chase you down--my dad looked down and we were going over a buck forty, and you were still flying away. My dad was like, "He's crazy--I'm shutting this puppy down" and then he backed off.
Hey, I'll be back in the NJ/NY area for about ten days at the beginning of August--perhaps we can meet up? I can drive my dad's new R1 (hehe). I haven't seen your FD in over three years and would like to catch up
Re: the efini stuff, so then there were never any "Mazda Rx7's" in Japan? The 1999 came w/the new mazda symbol, correct? so pre-1999 were efini 7's sold at mazda dealerships?
So many ?s....
Ok, time to go out and

Wishful thinking though, considering the average engine life of many 3rd gen. RX-7s...

When a 100,000 mile story is a big event, even stock, you know there's something going on. No one even blinks twice that a Supra TT made it to 100,000 miles, even at BPU horsepower levels, and I wish I had a dollar for every 100k+ Camaro on the road.
When new owners have to be immediately presented with a long checklist of "don't do this" and "monitor this", not to mention that there's such a term as "reliability mod" associated with the car, I think it's safe to say that it probably isn't regarded as the most reliable example of automotive engineering.
And when potential owners are warned to budget for expensive maintenance (including potential engine or turbo replacement) as well as gas, insurance, and everything else that goes with owning a car, isn't that a hint that the car might be considered less than perfect?
My comment had nothing whatsoever to do with my own car or experience. It didn't have to, there's enough evidence elsewhere to support it a hundred times over.
Yes, they can run for 100,000 miles or more. Yes, the can live healthy and productive lives if properly tuned and maintained, and watched like a hawk. But they also require a lot more hand holding than almost any other sports car I can think of, and this area of the forum is filled with posts about engine problems. Visit another car forum and see if you can find the same frequency of engine failures. I doubt it.
