What do you think is the BEST SMIC for a FD?
I'm worried about the cops giving me grief about my FMIC.
SOmeone told me that the Greddy SMIC is the best since it looks closest to stock if you powder coat the tanks and piping matte black. It doesn't compete with the other engine components for space.
Lastly I heard it works just fine in dropping air temps.
Anyone like to shed some light on this?
BTW, since I am not into drag racing I really don't think I need a FMIC. Road racing SMIC would work just fine.

Tri-Point uses Greedy's on all the Autocross cars they Build - I also read someplace that it has the best flow (lowest restriction ) of all the stock sized SMICs. I is a direct fit replacement for the stock unit no need to replace the AirCleaner or Battery and fits w the stock &/or "Efini" Y pipes - can use either the stock intake elbow or the Greedy elbow &hard pipe.
I wil be upgrading to the Greedy SMIC when the time comes (after the AEM ecu!)

Nah, thats not mine...it is similar though(well I'm not sure of the size of the rx7store one), my pipe design and endtanks are slightly different. I think mine also mounts different. Does anyone have a pic of the air duct that comes with that rx7store smic??? I'd like to see it.

I think the RX-7 Store on requires an aftermarket intake. The Greedy is superior to the Blitz. The Blitz core is the same size (h/w) as stock one just slightly thicker, the only real advantage the Blitz has over stock is the all welded construction. Because of its unique cast bottom tank the Greedy core is significantly taller than the stock or Blitz cores.

It depends on what you are looking for out of a SMIC. I had the Blitz SMIC and it fit perfectly without having to move anything. My temps dropped down some but while drag racing I feel a larger one would have worked better. If you are mostly stock then the Blitz or Greddy would be fine. I went FMIC now so I am not sure about the large SMIC's.

Here's some info about a few of the IC's available:

I'm also in the process or upgrading my IC. I'm looking for a direct replacement. I was choosing between the Blitz and GReddy. Someone close by was selling the Blitz SMIC, so I'm going to use that.
EDIT, that local person was Lane_Change up there.

Hey Mahjik,
Since I sold you my Blitz SMIC and I sold someone else my Intake my car is parked because I have not recieved anything from Jason yet. I have an exhaust and intake on order for almost 2 weeks now and it sucks. We are finally having nice weather out here and I am driving *GASP* and SUV. It sucks. The Blitz was an awesome IC in my opinion plus it cost a few hundred less then the Greddy. The larger ones require you to move your battery, AST, etc.. The Blitz is over 2 times the dimensions of the stock intercooelr. It is a bit taller, wider, and twice as thick.

The police and emissions stations will never hassle you with the Greddy SMIC, it is CARB certified. Since it does not come with a duct, you will need to get one seperately and modify it. I got a duct from Pettit from the Cool Charge II and trimmed it and added wheather stripping. It works pretty well with the new duct.

That is my Picture of the RX-7 store IC. There are a couple more pics of it around this one if you want a look.

You do need another intake like M2 or Pettit, Apexi will only work with lots of effort. Mine is set up for stock or Efini outlet( besides alternator ) and Greddy elbow.
Comes with duct. I had the Blitz as well, and it was a nice piece. Miss that shiny little thing.

I like my M2 Large...it is a pain the *** relocating the battery, however. My intake temps are great as long as I'm not in traffic--I had two fans installed to pull air through in an effort to combat that problem.
Why don't you just get some aluminum mesh and cover your grill opening? That should make the FMIC less visible...

So far I am leaning towards the Greddy SMIC. But the SPO Auto and RX7store SMIC has my attention.
Both are larger. And both uses stock piping for more of a stock look.
The question for both models is:
Which one has greater cooling surface/volume area?
And do they both require aftermarket intake and/or relocating the battery?
BTW, I am running PFC at 1 bar of boost.

Here's a summary about which intakes/batteries work with which SMICs:
MS: Drop in exactly like stock
SR: No battery relocation or airbox replacement for sure, unsure about crossover duct and IC duct (I'm referring to their small one, NOT the horizontal one)
Blitz: Drop in exactly like stock
Greddy: Requires new IC duct (included) and crossover duct (not included, RB crossover will work)
M2 Med: Requires new airbox (not inc., pettit, M2, N-tech, RX7 Fashion, CWR will all work) and duct (included)
M2 Large: Same as above but also requires battery relocation. I've seen the N-tech battary made to fit but it really wasn't designed to work.
CWR: Same as above but N-tech battery fits somewhat better
Pettit: Same as M2 Med
PFS: ? Designed to work with their intake, not sure how it works with others, no battery relocation needed.
Some special notes:
Greddy is the only one with a CARB #
MS is basically a stock IC with metal endtanks
Blitz is the only meaningful upgrade that drops in like stock
CWR is no longer available
Both M2s require a Greddy elbow and do not work with the Efini Y-Pipe.
Hope this helps.

I know how you feel Lane, I just pulled the passenger door so I could repaint that panel, and what do you know, no rain in site for 3 days...
Oh well, hopefully the holiday weekend will be nice. I'd like to get the panels back in, the IC installed, my pulleys installed, a few engine brackets painted and done on Friday so I can have the car on the road the rest of the holiday.
For me, I just wanted an IC that was better than the stock and was a drop in replacement. As you know, I'm not a track guy, so I don't need "the best of the best of the best" (in my best Will Smith imitation).

BATMAN, whats up with you being affraid of the cops?? i have never heard of one single person around here getting **** about a FMIC. no cop is gonna pull you over and say "Gee, son, is that a front mount intercooler i see there?". as for emmisions testing....there are MANY places you can hooked up.
dont let cops/tree huggers hold you back from having fun with your car.
