What can I use as SST for retracting brake piston???

I figure there have been several alternatives found by now. I'll be doing my first brake job soon...starting on the rear pads.

Unlike the front pistons you have to screw back in the rears. The fronts just push back in. I use a pair of channel locks and a shop rag. Its easy. Just make sure your brake fuid isnt topped off or it will back flow and spill out.

There is not much surface area on the piston.

Are you gripping the outside circumfrance of the piston with the channel locks?

Yes until I get down far enough I just spin it from the inside of the piston. It has a couple lips you can grip and spin it the rest of the way. You will see. Its easy as Pie.

for the front brakes spend $6 and get a C clamp, pushes the pistons in super easy. For the rears go to an autoparts store and buy the tool. It's like $3 and attaches toa 3/8 socket wrench. It has pins that line up with the slots in the piston. Super easy job. No fuss no muss

Here is an excellent how to on the brake job, complete with pictures. It makes the job fun.

Use some disc-brake-quiet on the shims. Autoparts store have them for $2 for a little pack. Don't forget to unscrew the brake fluid resevoir cap and do the brake job one at a time so you can trace back if you forget how things go back on.

I like doing it bc it was particularly hard bc I had all the instructions I needed. Also, it's nice to be able to work on the car without getting under it or bending your back over the fender sticking your hand into the cramped engine bay. I just sat down on my stool and leisurely worked on the brakes in comfort.

For the longest time, I've thought that brakes are hard to do bc I've had nothing but bad luck getting crapping brake jobs from shops. They use worthless parts and the idots always tell me to buy new rotors. No more soup for them for 1 yr!
