Because the stock precat gets clogged up and causes massive amounts of heat inside the engine bay thus providing a major reliablity issue.
I don't know if I would say uselss, but I'm convinced on the fact that by now 75% or more of FDs in the United States have had their stock precat taken out in favor of a DP.

Contrary to what this forum would have you believe, FD's are not "unicorns". They are rare, yes, but you can still very easily go out and buy one if you want. Its not like people are ripping apart Toyota 2000GT's, or putting 350's into mint condition low mileage shelby cobras. (note: LS1 is all aluminum 347 CI, and doesnt share much of anything with the old junky 350. Making that comparison is as fair as saying the 13b in the FD is the same junky carberated 12A from RX2's and rx3's back in the day) The reason you dont see more of them on the road is they spend most of their time being garage ornaments due to the half a million engineering shortfalls on mazdas part.
I dont see anyone out there ripping the engines out of corvettes, 03+ mustang cobras, tt supras and vipers. Why? Because they dont have the reputation to pop on the event a gas station has only 92 octane instead of 93 for their premium.

Another vote for the Downpipe.
A Reliability and Performance mod all rolled into one. In fact dollar for dollar , I'm not sure if there is a better performance mod out there.

Best mod
Well guys as you know I have done most everything to Spank. It is for sale you know.
I think the Aluminum Flywheel is the best. More power, and no additional problems will occure because of this mod. Then I have to agree that the DP is next. Then the Radiator. However since we can only name one the other two don't count.
Also we should consider cost. I have a Race RX7 93 TT. Approx 400 at the wheel and 2,600 lbs with sequential still in place. Faster than stink and handles outstanding. I also have a LS6 94 Touring. The LS6 is a great street car that requires very little car. Lots of power everywhere and great gas milage. I also have a 02 ZO6 that puts 477 at the wheel with 460 tq and it weights 2930. The vette is faster than either of my RX7's. However each car has its purpose. My Race RX7 Spank is my autox car. It will stomp my street car on an autox course, but do not compare the two on the open road. Also my LS6 has the leather, CC, A/C Moon roof, and $4,000 in sound system. Much heaver than my Spank but they have different purposes in life.
My Vette will beat both on the long open road and it has no lag.
So best mods should also include pricing. To put in a new bigger turbo is very expensive and not likely to be done as a single stand alone mod. Unless you know of anybody that can just go single and change NOTHING ELSE ON THE CAR. Since that is not the case then a single turbo does not qualify for Best Single Mod.
Power FC is a great choice. Monitor everything and get the most out of what you have. I like the flywheel because it increases what you have and will not create a problem with anything else. The PFC monitors everything but if you try to increase the power now you have to do additional mods to cover the additional power you just created.

There is downside. While you gain quicker acceleration, you lose (admittedly not alot, but some) around town driveablity with a lightened flywheel. And last I looked, they were a bit pricey.
But AFAIK, there is NO downside to a good downpipe. It increases horsepower and torque, reduces underhood temps, illiminates the chance of a plugged pre-cat damaging the engine, it's less expensive, and alot easier to install.

Although I like the purpose of a HPDS as "best mod", and I feel that every owner should go through one, as far as "bang for the buck", I'd go with the DP. A reputable HPDS costs a pretty large chunk of change. A lightweight flywheel is a great mod, but takes some work to install (or $$ to have it installed). A stand-alone ECU is a great mod, but requires patience and thorough understanding of its tuning abilities and parameters before you will get the full benefits. The same basically applies to tires, and good rubber costs $$$ too.
