I think the next car you build you should use an Electromotive ecu. Im no "expert" but I live next to Defined Autoworks and every time they get a blown car limping into there shop the unprecise power-fc seems to be a big factor. I have been running my Electromotive for a while now and have had no problem with my engine. I do know the my Electromotive uses a 60 tooth trigger wheel unlike the PFC wich uses the cars stock one.

Sorry to hear about your motor, but it seems like a lot of this could have been prevented. Sounds like you went for some go fast mods before you should have done all the preventive maintance. Ie getting the injectors cleaned and flow balanced. Skimping on **** might save money for short term but it almost always ends up biting you in the ***, especially with the FD.
There is no reason why motors let go after a year of use other than lack of taking the proper precautions from what I have seen.
