A way to tell a ported motor w.o opening it up??

floor it in second gear...and run through third gear...a non ported motor will have peak power end around 6500 rpms...it will not pull and pull and pull and pull all the way thru the power band. non ported motors are also more responsive on the low end...
my ported motor feels like i could pull all the way thru 9k rpms...it doesnt feel like i should have to shift in terms of power range...the stock motor tails off at higher rpms and you can literally feel it.

depending on the size of the port job you can really hear it at idle. Non ported just hums, while a ported motor sounds awesome... it kind of pulsates. At high RPMs it feels like another turbo kicks in around 6700 rpm

hmmmmmmmmmmmm. . . . this is all very interesting. before i tore my car down my car read around 12 on the vacuum. it also pulled well passed 6500. due if i have a ported motor in mine. . . . . im gonna **** my pants!!!!!!! that would be crazy. haha. i didnt think you could tell the diff. like that. my car has been far from stock for a while though. does the pfc mess up the vacuum readings at all? man, if i have ported motor im gonna . . . . FREAK OUT!!!!!!!!

Wow ... you're gonna FREAK OUT!!!??? I guess then you can add that to your long, drawn-out, mind-numbing signature.
Mike is right, you can hear it. I can hear mine seemingly miles away and it doesn't sound like a gas weedeater, but I certainly don't FREAK OUT!!! The vacuum reading can also be a good indication if everything else is healthy and you don't know what you're listening for.

Yeah it can, a lot depends on the exhaust and the turbo(s)/manifold as far as the pitch goes, but it'll sound a bit more open and will thump a bit at idle. Mine basically sounds like you want absolutely nothing to do with it no matter what you drive, which is great by me because I don't like idiots in cars. It does attract attention, which sucks.

*tears out his hair and TOTALLY FREAKS OUT!!* waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa UI HATE LIFE!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
Mine sounds like a 'brup brup brup brup brup brrr brup brup brup" ph3@r my pantomiming skillz. I get 14hg of vacuum on my car

the powerband drop is not completely related to the porting of the engine... if a ported engine with very restrictive turbo, it is not likely going to pull hard on the top end....
also, not all ported motor have smog problem.. its all depends on how much overlap is induced to the port... when there is more overlap, the exhaust gas deludes the intake charge, thus causes unclean mixture, and makes the blab-blab sound
