Water Thermoswitch for Auto Tranny? (I think)
Can someone please take a look at this picture and tell me what goes here? I found a loose wire under the hood and I believe it once was here. I have 94 FD with an auto tranny. The guy at the dealership said it was the water thermoswitch for the automatic transmission. I just need it verified.
Any help would be great!

Well, it LOOKS like the location for the low coolant sensor, which then turns on the little red light on the temp gauge and sounds a really upsetting buzzer when NOT grounded through coolant. BUT, I just checked my car, and my coolant sensor is on the flat face on the other side of the upper rad hose (the big one) in your picture. BUT I have a reman, and the newer waterpump housings may have swapped that location. So my vote is low coolant sensor, which has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the auto tranny. I though the auto tranny temp sensing was done through the ECU tepm sensing, which is the green connector on the back of the housing you show in your picture?
If you don't have your low coolant buzzer going off, someone may have permanently grounded that connection to fool the system. Not smart, as the low coolant buzzer is REAL important, if not somewhat indicative of impending expenditures...

That neck does look slightly different than mine but I think you are correct. I believe the low coolant sensor is further down the neck and nearly hidden behind the hose in your pic.

thanks for the reply, but i do believe it to be the thermoswtich for the auto tranny. Do you have a service manual? If so, please check out section k-34. It shows the water thermoswtich. This section id strictly for auto trannies.

not what i was going to say at all spurvo.....i am open to all replies. That's the bad thing about these forums. You think you have a correct answer and someone contradicts it. I just need some answers to look into. I am not one of those guys spouting off things about "use the search" or "newbie". I believe all questions are good and relevant. Afterall, that is why there is a forum.

thanks damon, that's what i was thinking. Where are u located in dallas? I live in okc (not to far away). Do you think this sensor for tranny is something i need to change before i drive the car again or what.

cqbtf,
It is the water thermo switch for the auto motor. You may want to replace it with an aftermarket temp sending unit and install a good thermostat gauge inside the car on the A pillar.
Tim
PS Manual tranny cars just have a sealed plug (allen head) installed at that position.

Thanks for the reply!
Do you have any part numbers for an aftermarket temp sending unit? Or do you know how much they are? I can get a new thermoswitch form the dealership for around $56.

I had same problem about 3 months ago. The outisde fell apart to my thermoswitch on my 93 autotranny rx-7 and caused my battery to go dead over night.
I just looked and I misplaced my folder with all my receipts in it. I think i paid around 40 for it from mazda malloy plus some shipping.
Here is the number so you can check their prices.
Ask for Ray at Malloy Mazda (888) 533-3400.
