vented hood - mazdaspeed vs scoot
i am going to get a vented hood to cool down the track car and i need some help on deciding between the scoot style and mazdaspeed style.
The dealio is that I like the visual look of the mazdaspeed one better, but the scoot hood has almost 3 times the vented space, thus making me believe it will do a better job of venting/cooling, although does not look as good.
what do you guys think?

Thats a hard choice.
The mazdaspeed hood would probably look better on your track car cuz it'll match your front end, and vent air out pretty good too. The scoot hood would vent out alot more air, and it would bring in the air too. The problem with the scoot is that most likely it wouldn't look too good on your car, or atleast thats wat i think.
I'm throwing my vote towards the mazdaspeed.

Mazdaspeed also makes the "R-Spec" kit which has 2 additional vents in the hood along the sides.

There is also another hood floating around similar to the Mazdaspeed hood you posted, with two additional vents near the top(windshield) corners. Maybe someone else can recall who makes it.

well, i just noticed somthing that migh make the difference.... the vent placement...
the mazdaspeed hoos was designed for the stock intercooler, so the large SMIC I have seems to overlap with the vents on the ms hood, in other words, the vents are 'on top of' the larger ic duct and top of the ic, not 'behind' the ic, where it would vent more effeciently, the ms vents are almost being 'blocked' by the duct/ic top
...the scoot hodd thoughg, has its vents further back allowing better flow from the back of the IC/radiator to the vents since they sit far behind the IC space.
any thoughts on that from the peanut gallery?

Wat about the hood that Petit sells. They say its a mazdaspeed hood but it looks like a knightsports hood i've seen. It has bigger vents over the i/c for more air flow and 2 more vents near the rear (closer to the windshield ) for any left over air that needs to get out.
Just another option to help ya out.

Just as with ROTORhead93's pic, you can enlarge the vents on the MS hood as much as you want.
If you can get the Scoot hood without the front/center hole, that would provide you with more than ample cooling on the track.
I remember when we put our hood on Max's car the vent was very close to the top of the M2 SMIC. If you enlarge the vent onto the flat surface you will get the cooling you want. As for his RX6 turbo, it cleared just fine.
But I am biased...
If you can get the Scoot hood without the front/center hole, that would provide you with more than ample cooling on the track.

Well....my biased opinion says go for Scoot because of its far superior cooling capacity. I say this, because it is obvious that vent area is much, much, much greater then any other hood.
Also, not many people know this but, the center scoop is an actual tunnel that was designed to send an un-interupted stream of air back and then split to go to the ABS and Booster on the other side. But, with our R1's strutbar, you will have to cut a notch into the tunnel and fab up a plastic hump to reseal it, but leaving a hump for the strut bar. That will disrupt the airflow to the brakes, but very minimaly as you have a constant max. amount of air being funneled regardless. To cure this, I know for a fact that I have seen much lower strut bars then the OEM. Maybe that would have worked too..but that means more $ on top of the hood.
As much as you dislike the looks, there is no denying that superior cooling is to be had by going this route.
Check my site vv because I have a pic of the scoot on an auto cross...really not that distastefull at all.

I plan on buying a Scoot replica within the next few months. I think it looks very good when it is painted although some would say it is a bit over the top. Eventually, I'm going to go with a V-mount setup, so the Scoot will be very functional. Until then, I plan on routing my intake pipe with a big K&N filter to just in front of the alternator. I have seen this setup on one other car with a Scoot hood, and it seems that it would be effective at drawing in more cool air through the large "Viper-style" hole.

the duct to the abs/brake stuff
i noticed at a few events that the abs unit failed sometimes, and I think its the abs relay is tripping due to heat...so this may be a good reason to get the scoot and see if the 'duct to abs' does anythign for me there.
...but the mazda speed hood does a great job of keeping the nose part of visual flow intact and looks nice and smooth...
ahh man, i like em both, this is a hard choice!!!

scoot hood all the way, more openings more venting. functional and it looks a lot more aggresive then any other hood out there, plus it will cool your turbos/dp and your brake master cylinder personnaly, im suprised there are so many people which dont like scoot type hood

I would think about that, it may not be true, ... my 2 cents on it:
- the engine bay is under pressure when driving, in other words when moving forward at sufficient speed the air being pushed into the nose pressurizes the engine bay, thus hoods with vents help remove that pressure and allow the air to flow more and makes cooling (ic or radiator) more efficient...
HOWEVER, that also means that unless the scoot hod front duct is totally isolated from the rest of the engine bay , it MAY also end up being a 'vent' and not a duct, and have the air being pushed out of it, or be neutralized, ... that is why in the original design they duct it all the way past the side vents to the back
... who knows, im just sayin look at it all...

i vote for the scoot hood all the way. More openings mean more venting. i think its much more functional and it looks a lot more aggresive then any other hood out there; plus it will cool your turbos/dp and your brake master cylinder Personnaly, im suprised there are so many people which dont like scoot type hood!

Not flaming anyone just curious. Kinda like the thought that removing the weather strip in the back of the engine bay helps the air "exit" was found to be a myth.
Just curious as the "direction" of the airflow at the vent sites.
Anyways....
as for voting, asthetically, I like the mazdaspeed R-spec damian.

i agree, but i know that peopl reported lower tmps with the vented hoods, so really that is all im after,

i have the scoot and i really like the way it looks and as far as cooling goes, you cant beat it. weather you are driving or stopped, it gets most of the hot air out or gets cold air in. they are also not that expensive.

v-mounts can fit under the stock hood...but the mazdaspeed hood would benefit the v-mount better than a FMIC. but i'm a simple man and prefer the mazdaspeed over the scoot...if at a stop while in the rain, will rain hit the motor with that scoot? or are there water guides or somfin?

I think the Scoot looks like ***. Is it a hood or is it a cheese grater?
I am actually looking at vented hoods also, I hate the look of the Scoot. It is ultra ricer, ultra agressive, and just goes against the nice lines of the FD. The Mazdaspeed doesn't. But the Mazdaspeed really doesn't to what it should do.
