Turbo Spool:....amazing sound!!

I installed a GReddy compression tube (elbow) last night along with the IC hard-pipe kit. Took the car out for a spin (no pun intended) and BOY WAS I SURPRISED to actually hear the Turbo spool for the first time since I've owned the car (3 months).

The Turbo spooling sounds like a super loud Dremmel tool on steroids. Awesome, awesome sound. !!

It's obvious that the turbo spool sound resonates better through hard pipes than through the stock IC pipes the FD's are sold with. I'll be replacing the stock Intake pipes with an aluminum hard-pipe kit next week. Can't wait to "hear" what happens then!

Just thought i'd share this with all of you. Thanks for looking. -Jimmy

Ahhh, lets just say you could probably fit your head into that turbo... definently not a stock replacement.

The HKS T51R KAI is an upgrade. You can buy it in a kit or the turbo by itself. The RX7store can get you either one. I think the turbo itself is 2500.

I have the kit and it's amazing.

areXseven,
What else do you have on your car? I really notice that I could hear the turbos when the intake and the downpipe went on (I could hear the BOV too!) If you don't have those yet, they'll make a difference too.

DP and an open intake will defiantly open it up.

That's the one sound I will never get tired off

hmmm...are you sure the dremmel sound is what you think it is? i had that problem on a set of rebuilds from a horseshit builder called Performance Techniques...turbonetics.com is their scam site. ...anyhow it sounded like a dentist drill...what it really was damaged compressor wheels due to poor balancing. the car drove like stink...sounded like a dentist drill...all the ricers thought it sounded badass...what it sounded to me like was "need another rebuild".

it shouldnt be TOO loud...if ya know what i mean.

resource would know better than I in regards to this...but tis my personal experience ...just some thoughts.

artguy ; Yeah it's a real high pitch whine. It's pitch gets higher as the rpms climb. And it only starts when the car begins to boost. The spooling sound wasn't evident until I installed the IC hard pipes last night. And the car performs great, but the Turbo now sounds like a super duper dremmel.

yeah...well if its dentist drill/ dremmel noise which you can hear thru the exhaust and even thru the radio (like you have a powerful dremmel spinning on your dashboard) i will bet cash money that its either chipped wheels on the exhaust side or balancing issues. are they original turbos?

the dremmel sound is not right...i have ball bearing twins which actually sound a little louder in terms of spool..zsiiiiiiinnnnnnnnngggg! but it is barely audible...like a ring in your ears but louder.

what are your mods? what boost are you running? just curious....

j

my car ran fine like that btw...but when i pulled the turbos i saw what the problem was...they were fried from running high boost and running leaner...high egts.

artguy ; My Fd doesn't boost above 10 psi. I'll keep "my ears opened" in case I start hearing abnormal sounds, like grinding noises coming from the turbos.

I beg to differ on your analysis regarding possible chipped wheels and/or the off balance issue, but I'm fairly new to the rotary scene so your advise and comments are well taken and much appreciated. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Thanks.

i had no grinding noises at all...just the dremmel sound...like the dremmel was in my car on the dash...zzzing.

that is not a normal sound...i had no issues with performance or boosting...just noise which people thought was just my turbos spooling...i wish you luck with it.

if and when they do go...i hope they dont...be sure to pull em apart and see the internals. it would be interesting to see if your assumed issues are the same.

cheers

Are there any kits available and sold to recondition stock turbos? If so, can the kit be installed with "typical" tools?

well you wont need it til ya need it....i drove mine for about five k like that before i threw down for the m2 upgrades...i could have got a bunch more miles out of them Im sure.

bnr should have a kit....and it is possible to do it yourself...

i wouldnt worry about it...as you said...i could be wrong.

you cant boost past ten lbs....you still running the stock restrictor pills right? if so...thats why.

artguy: are mods are pretty much the same.....except you've got a profec b (*damn*) and a 3 bar map sensor (*damn*).......do you have any maps? my power fc is just base maps right now.

Did you find that your three bar map sensor helped at all? also,., how do you like your m2's? I want to beat the **** out of me rebuilds and get something like that, or go single.

thanks matt

nice setup 93 black....i like my twins a lot...im very happy with the results so far....you wont want my maps though...im getting 16lbs of boost by 2800 rpms and am still sequential with a larger than original m2 garret gt30 compressor wheel on the secondary...take a look at my dyno sheets so far www.conceptart.org/dyno ...yer power curve wont look anything like that and so you would be better off starting out clean and with some time on a datalogit.

if you upgrade the twins on your car the only persons maps who will help ya will be yer own...i tried running other peeps m2 maps and even though the mods were similar I would have gotten detonation running them.

the map sensor helps if i run 17lbs or more...thats it...the stocker wont read reliably much past 16lbs...i wouldnt trust it anyhow.....the profec b i actually pulled off and want to sell....the 3bar boost control kit from xs works with the power fc which is currently doing a good job of controlling my boost.

That is what my turbos sounded like right before I had to replace them. Oil all over my IC pipes

Now that I think of it, when I took off the stock compression tube, the inside was oiled??? But the Throttle Body was pretty clean!! Go figure.
