Turbo Clatter/Chatter
I am fairly new to this forum although I have had my 3rd gen for about 10 years. I have a new engine and transmission in now. Less than 5000 miles. However when I hit about 10 psi for the boost I hear a clicking or tapping noise coming from the area of the turbos. I cannot reproduce this when there is no load on the engine though. I am currently looking at going to the single setup. I was wondering if this is definitly the turbos or something else. Has anyone ever heard there cars making this chatter noise and what it could be. The turbos are the originals with around 78000 miles on them. Thanks a lot for any help. I have all the essentials for the engine. Koyo rad. Aluminum AST. downpipe, midpipe, and tail. There are no emissions equipment currently on the car. Once again thanks. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I don't won't the engine dying again.

I think I'm getting the same thing.
My PFC says its knock but it is really quite loud. It starts as soon as the vacuum is gone and psi starts to build. I'm not lean and the motor has only about 6000mi. on it.
I have been trying to find a word to describe it, but I think eclark01's word gives the best description - clattering. Like a muffled bolt rattling around in a tin can going 100mph.

It might be some flapper door of turbo precontrol valve or turbo control valve.
You should pop the hose of the turbo precontrol actuator and make some pressure, so that the actuator arm and opens the valve - then check it for play/rattle. If it's coming from the turbo control valve, you would probably hearing it after transition to twin turbo mode. You can check it similarily.

If you could locate this for me in words that would be great. And the chatter over the past few weeks has gotten worse to the point where it will boost but at WOT even in low rpms the clicking/chatter comes alive.

I posted in a similar thread moments ago. I had a situation in the past where I was getting the chatter you're describing after a recent engine swap. It ended up being the turbo control actuator to manifold mounting bolts being loose...two 12mm hex bolts that go up vertically into the bottom of the manifold. Take a peek....maybe they're loose.
