tranny swaps
well my tranny in my fd just gave up on me and im new to the whole fd/rwd world.
im looking to be getting a used tranny and just swapping it in , instead of getting my current one rebuilt.
but i was wondering if the trannies on these cars can just be dropped and swapped without major parts being removed. and done in a driveway/garage type of deal???
i would rather do the work myself, so is there a how to or something of that nature?

Yep, dropping and replacing the tranny is not a big deal. Just read up on the pull clutch disassembly procedure, and have the service manual handy. Buying a low mileage JDM tranny (cheap) or used tranny off the classifieds (cheaper) is a good way to go.
The only 'issue' to doing it in a driveway is that it's kinda hard to do without a low-profile transmission jack or a couple of helpers. It weighs around 100lb, and even if you get the car up nice and high on jackstands it's kinda cramped. Get at least 24" of clearance between the bottom of the car and the floor.

You'll probably need the back end lifted a bit on stands as well as you have to remove the power plant frame to get the trans out. And don't drop the power plant frame on your head... It's heavy and hurts, trust me. Oh yeah, pull the inspection cover and remove all the clutch pressure plate bolts before you try and drop the trans, the throwout bearing is a pull type and is captive in the pressure plate, unless you're more skilled with the screw driver method than I was you'll kick yourself trying to hold the trans up and loosen them at the end...
