There was a Type R FD in Japan, just had shorter gearing than the regular 4.1 gearing, I believe it was 4.3. It's been around for a long time, even before the RZ.

yes, there was Type R in Japan. Also Type RZ, Type RB. Type RZ is Special limited model.
Type R is the top model. Type R Bathurst is a special limited model of Type R.
Spirit R's are the Special limited final production model.

Most Bone stock FD's here(well, in Japan) have 2 oil coolers, cloth seats, 4.1 final gear, and red front strut tower bar. Almost NONE have automatic tranny's or leather seats.

Do they even offer leather seats on FDs in Japan? I got a 2002 RX-7 brochure from Japan, and every single picture of the interior has cloth seats, so I was kinda wondering about that...

Type R has never really been a 'top model' per se. Models like the RS or the RZ have always had more features. For instance, 16inch were always standard on Type R while the RS had standard ewuipment like 17 inch wheels, larger brakes, better suspension, etc.
There were no production limits on the 2002 Type R Bathurst but there was a 2001 Type R Bathurst R which was limited(500 made) as well as offered in sunburst yellow. Both models were based on the standard Type R, hence the inclusion of the Type R in their name.

Nope, not exactly. The RZ was a standard model for most years (92-98). Only the 2000 RZ was limited(175 made).

rpm_pwr: The RZ model was the first FD to get a 4.3 final gear as standard equipment.
Pic from 1992 RX-7 Brochure. The CYM Type S looks nice.
